The Official Chicago Cubs Misery, er.....Could this be the Year? Thread

Bosox1976Bosox1976 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭✭✭
As a Cubs season ticket holder, I am outraged at how poorly they have been playing - particularly mental errors, horrendous finishes, and lack of hustle. While they have disappointed me often since I moved to Chicago, I have really only been outraged once before (when that dipstick Wendell Kim caused Aramis to re-tear his groin). They are barely watchable at this point.

BoSox ... the Cubs are an absolute JOKE of a franchise and I live out here. Their biggest problem, IMO, is the lack of talent throughout the organization and the horrendous decisions made by their GM pn player evaluation. They pay ridiculous money to FAs that I wouldn't touch. Put the cubs roster up against nearly any other big leagues team and go position by position and I bet you would have a hard time ending up with a lineup with more Cubs than not in it.

  • Their best pitching prospects crashed and burned, they threw crazy money at Alonso Soriano (way way overpaid) Sadly they are going to suck badly this year.

I really like Aramis Ramirez though... I wish he was still with the Pirates`

What a difference a week makes. Cubs starting to play with some fire. Maybe Zambrano and Piniella woke them up. Hats off to Soriano for his 3 HR's.

sure ... name me a team where you would compare starting line-ups and choose more current Cubbies than players from the other team. BTW I read in the local paper that the only player on the All Star Ballot drafted by the Cubbies is Corey Patterson. That scrub has no shot at making an all star team.

Being in the Chi-town area I'd love for them to actually be competitive.

Be thankful you're not a Buc fan. First, we gave you Aramis for free and got only a scrub in return (Bobby Hill). Then, we just drafted a relief pitcher with the #4 overall pick because he would be cheap to sign. Forget the fact that most of the previous #1 draft picks we had were pitchers and blew out their arms. Also forget the fact that we're lucky to score 3 runs in a game. Cheap is the most important thing. That way the Nuttings pocket handsome profits at the expense of the Yankees and Cubs who have their money stolen in the name of "competitive balance". I used to be a small market champion but after the abomination of the Pirates and their greedy owners, I'd prefer the small market teams make their own way.

This is not your fathers' Pirates.

Pirates drafting a closer to protec all of their big leads is pretty silly.

Halos - Felix Pie and Ryan Theriot are going to be good players. While Pierre and J. Jones were wasted money, they have done a nice job putting together a rotation this year. Maybe Carlos Z is back to form too. I think it is a slightly above average lineup - just not playing like it consistently. Drafts have not yielded much fruit over the years though (based on the fizzle out of Wood/Prior).

I don't think the Cubs have a bad team, they're just cursed!

Halosfan, I understand what you're saying, but the Cubs do have a few really good players. I'd take Derek Lee, for instance, over Richie Sexson. Others have already mentioned Aramis Ramirez, and Soriano is very good despite his bloated salary. I also think Zambrano is a genuine ace and Rich Hill looks like he's going to be good for a very long time too. I guess what I'm saying is that there's at least a good nucleus there . . . just enough to keep Cubs fans interested and hopeful but not quite enough to make their dreams come true.

The problem for the Cubs is they have some good youngsters but they are having to depend on them this year. They are really 1 or 2 years away from being really good. They need a reliable closer but in this division they are as good as anyone right now.

Another grueling victory yesterday - blow 5 run lead in the top of the ninth, come back to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Soriano again had the GWRBIs. He has been huge this week.

Reports are that my Marlins picked up Jacque Jones from the Cubbies. What are we getting here? Does Jones have anything left? And who did the Marlins give up?

My first trip to Wrigley was to watch the Cubbies play the Milwaukee Braves, Warren Spahn beat them 3-2. I was hooked the minute I walked up to the stadium with my dad. It took me 5 years to also become a White Sox fan. Needless to say not much to brag about until 2005. Their pitching is way too thin but fortunately for them they play in the NL Central, so who knows.

While I have no expectations, stranger things have happened. I always thought the Cubs had a better chance of playing in the World Series (1945) before Northwestern (1949 until they played USC about 9 years ago) would make another Rosebowl Appearance in my lifetime. Well, at least Otto Graham saw the game...image

Saw some tape on him yesterday, his fastball is hitting 94 consistently. What a great story it would be if he makes it all the way back and helps pitch them into the World Series.
  • Im not getting one ounce of excitement about Wood. I just dont see him contributing very much to the team, if at all, this year.

However, Im pumped about the last month obviously.

Had to chuckle, Ditka was being interviewed on ESPN radio today and he is a huge cubbie fan, but states he won't watch the games because he brings them bad luck. Yeah Mike the Cubs lose because of you. image Newsflash they were losing long before you got drafted by Halas and migrated to ChiTown. Anyway I'll be watching and most likely be crying in my beer again. image

Not sure why he pulled Zambrano after only 85 pitches. Marmol gave up 2 quick runs. Does not make sense to save a guy for game 4 when there may not be one.
