86 Topps Football help

Im just getting started with this set. Ive dealt with mainly vintage Baseball.
Anything worth grading?
Are PSA 8's worth the fee, Stars or commons?
Any help or info greatly appreciated.

Some 10's are EXTREMELY difficult to find in PSA 10. The commons even command strong premiums. I wanted to bid on a Pop 1 PSA 10 Joey Browner and it went for $222 (Thanks Marc) lol

The only card in PSA 9 that is going to cost you a big chunk of change is the Rice RC. That can be had in the $185-225 range very regularly. The other big stars (Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Andre Reed) are all in that $30 range in PSA 9. PSA 8's, aside from Rice, aren't really worth the time to have graded. Commons that can net a 9, especially low pop and any 10's are always a good idea.

    Hope that helps.

envoy is right on, but would add that the Steve Young card is also worth grading if it's an 8, just due to how tough those in 9 are
  • Thanks guys

  • Thanks for starting your collection. It's been great seeing 6-7 new people since I started my set just 6 months ago. My set is currently #3. I'm only buying 9s as I think 10s are over priced and I would not pay to grade any 8s (including Rice, Young or any other stars). The William Perry PSA 9 has gone for over $100. The Rice is not the most expensive card in the set. You can pick up a Rice 9 for $225-300 any day of the week. Every 3-4 months you'll find a Steve Young PSA 9 and it'll go for $400-500. So much for SMA prices. Give me a call if you want to discuss.

Dang! Really? I don't pay as much attention to this set but I started looking at the graded prices more once I busted a few racks that netted some very nice looking raw cards. I guess I didn't see a PSA 9 Young at the time. That really surprises me. Good to know though.

PSA sucks when it comes to these cards. Sometimes a tiny bit of a white stripe will be on the top left or bottom right corner, and there's no way they'll give it a 10 even if it's perfect in every way. Also, the design of the card sometimes creates and optical illusion that makes the card look OC even if it isn't. For instance, on first glance, Publius' Rice looks like it might be OC right to left, but I bet if you measure the borders it's 50/50.
