In Thailand and Looking for Thai Proof or Mint Sets

I'm on a slow connection so don't have a great ability to search the internet. I'm vacationing in Thailand and would like to get a mint or proof set of Thai coins to commemorate my trip. Not even sure if such a thing exists. Any suggestions on a good place to go? I'm going to be all over the place, but my "home base" will be Bangkok. Thanks!

The Royal Thai Mint is in Bangkok. If you are taking any type of tour, you can ask a tour guide, or even ask at a hotel desk. If that fails, give a call to TAT (Tourisn Authority of Thailand). They may be able to help you.

When I lived in Thailand I bought a few of these sets but that was 20 years ago and I don't remember how I got them.

Be warned, DO NOT buy any coins from the street markets. 99% chance they will be fake.

  • This Eurpean guy owns a coin shop in Pattaya. Now when you're in Pattaya, only shop for coins. Right. Ha Ha Ha. (I was over there awhile back, but that's another story).

I spent a couple of years there just listen to the teacher (Ajaan) and stay the heck away from the street vendors no matter how good the coin looks. Thai proof sets are hard to come by ( at least by my experience) but mint sets readily available. There are many single proof silver coins as well. There was one mint set by the Royal Thai Mint I passed up and wish now that I had bought it. It is a hard, red cased set with 32 coins from 1946-1963. It had 2 silver 20 baht coins in the set and it looked really nice mint set.

Thanks All! I did visit the Royal Thai Mint and picked a few things up. Got rolls and bags of the most recent uncirc. coins for face, kept a few and spent the rest. Also got a really nice set of medals, one from each province. They are 1" and copper. 77 in all (they added a few larger cities in addition to the provinces). Almost all of them had toned an electric blue color. the whole set was 800 Baht (about $25). The detail on them is really nice for the price. When I get back, I'll try and post a few images. I'll be going to Pattaya in a few days and will try and check out the linked shop.

Very cool! That is something I would like. Are the medal in Thai or English or both. What does the one for Chiangmai Prov or City look like?

One side, the obverse I think, has an elephant walking through an archway. Has both Thai and English lettering showing thew province and Thailand. Reverse has Wat Phrathat Doisuthep with its name in both English and Thai. If I remember right, they also had 2 inch and 3 inch versions, but they were considerably more (100 Baht and 400 Baht each I think).

My house was at the foot of Doi Suthep.
