JHF selling his collections? Or just part?

I noted Teletrade will be auctioning his proof Roosevelt Dime collection this Sunday, and I noted their statement, "we look forward to offer additional selections from JHF's collection in the future. "

When can we all get a crack at his US-PI beauts?

By the way, Heritage has this beaut up right now...

  • Hi IloloKano:

Yes, I'm selling parts of my collection. Like the Roosie dime proofs. But I'm selling in a way that requires no work from me. Dealers are handling it entirely for me. So the last time I was in the states, one of the dealers visited and picked up a few collections, like the Roosie dime proofs. I'm so much out of the mechanics of the sale, that your thread here is the first I knew that they were already up for sale.

Some of my US Philippines duplicates have also begun dribbling on the market. But US-Philippine collectors have a mating dance they go through before buying and selling and it takes waaay too much time to sell a $1,000 coin -- and it causes too much angina. I'm too old and cranky to put up with that any more and I don't.

So instead, I've been begun giving them, free and clear, to some dear friends in the Philippines. They are either collecting them or selling 'em on their own with the take 100% for themselves, their choice.

Until some serious collector steps up to the plate and says ... "Okay, I know how rare these US Philippines are and where they're going -- and I'll pay good money without wincing" ... all the incredible pop tops and one-of-a-kinds in my collection are going to stay off the market.

    Best wishes,

  • I strongly believe Heritage Auctions is your best bet for realizing good prices. Note the one which I mentioned, USA Administration 20 Centavos 1928/7-M, KM-174, MS65 PCGS, Gem brilliant Uncirculated.... sold for $4,200.00 (including the buyer's premium). I would have thought it would fetch $10,000.00 or more, and if price were no object for me, I would have bid up to that amount. Unfortunately, my tastes greatly exceed my budget. I am diligently working on that however.

I noted Heritage had also auctioned the 1912s Peso, in which you were outbid. USA Administration Peso 1912-S, KM-172, MS65 Eliasberg PCGS That auction set a new world record, and Heritage has made recent efforts to bring US-PI coins to the attention of their registered bidders, with an article written expressly on them, (I couldn't find the link, but it was earlier this year, I believe).

Telling you all this is actually not to my benefit, since I would love to see some of your US-PI seconds on one of the lesser online auction sites, as that would present me with much less competition, and I might actually luck out and get a bargain due to lack of bidders. The chance of me being able to acquire such a coin is slim at best anyways, so instead, I am trying to direct you for the best possible results. A secondary benefit for me is that I believe US-PI coins auctioned on Heritage will tend to raise awareness (and interest) over time, and that should help the valuation of coins I may one day sell. So there is still some self-interest in play here. image Sly, aren't I?

Next time my wife and I plan a visit to Iloilo, I will try to contact you and arrange to travel to Manila for a visit. I hope the angina reference was simply in jest and that you actually do not fight that battle.
