...has become the most overused sports cliche there is. It seems that you can't watch TV or listen to sports radio for two minutes without hearing someone say it...
Is anyone else sort of irritated by this, or am I just having a bad day?

It's a necessary term, because people do some variation of it all the time, in the wider world, as well as sports, but I've started mixing in similar ones like "Thrown to the wolves" or "Tossed overboard", just to add some variety.
