eBay: Bid Assistant?

When did eBay launch this "Bid Assistant" program? Looks like they're trying to squeeze into some of the robo-snipers territory...

I think it's a nice feature and I'm surprised they waited so long to offer a "snipe" utility

<< <i>Looks like bids are executed immediately (for the best item of the group) and not at a set time. Not really a sniping program. >>
Correct, but one of the features of most robo-snipers is "bid grouping", which is similar to what eBay's Bid Assistant does. So in a sense eBay is starting to encroach on the robo-snipers' feature set.
this bid assistant needs to be looked at for what it does AND does not do for the bidder.

What's hard about sniping? You wait till the last minute; then bid. Or, if you're lazy, have your robot do it for you.

What does it do? What does it not do?

you need to anticipate what the final price might be w/o your bid and decide for yourself if you want it for more ..like to die for, well almost
you can lock out other bidders if you snipe at the same time if your snipe is higher. ie if the current offer is $100 and five people snipe at 3 seconds for an amount of $110, $115 $120, and $150 and $160 the $160 bid will win at the next highest offer assuming the $100 bidder was at his max offer. If the next highest offer ebay will take is $105 then the person who bid at $160 will (should, if no other offers) win at $105. it works that way if the other bidders are using the same snipe program.
it's not just putting a bid in at the last second possible through whatever snipe you have.
some other places wil look at all bids and then you wind up paying $160, if that was the highest offer, regardless of time bid
this "scientific theory" is my own so take with less than it's worth, yet I have been able to get items that should have gone for more, for less....IMHO, by timing and amounts, sometimes amounts much more than the anticipated ending sales price...and I was willing to pay whatever I bid.
