There are two physical coin shops in Gainesville. One is on University Avenue near 34th Street. (Coming from the North, you'd take the second Gainesville exit and head East. The store is a couple of miles on the left from the exit. After you pass the movie theater on the left, the store is in the next strip mall on the left. It's about 10 minutes or less from the freeway.) This owner is honest but has very few slabbed coins. I don't see many customers in his shop and I sometimes wonder how he stays in business. He is a pleasant enough person, however, and I trusted him enough to sell my Father's stamp collection to him. The other coin store is on NW 43rd Street near 16th Avenue. (After passing the first store, you'd turn left at the next signal, onto 43rd Street, about 200 yards down the road from the coin store. Then you'd go about a mile or so [North] until you see a shopping area on you right. Among a few others, there is a "Beef O'Brady's" and an "A-1 Sewing" store you can see from the street. This coin shop is next to "A-1 Sewing." It's about 3 or 4 minutes from the first coin store.) I think this owner has a lot more high-end coins in his shop. However, I had a bad experience with him over a miserable 8 dollar proof set and so I have purchased ONLY that one $8 proof set from him. (My opinion is that a dealer who sells a nasty (spotted) proof set to my uninformed wife and then laugh--literally--in my face to his friends when I showed up to exchange it deserves no business from me...especially when the proof set cost only $8!) So, bottom line: Is it worth your time to go to either store? If you are hurting for time, I suspect not. But if you are looking to kill some time in Gainesville, possibly. Don't expect too much from the first store and hope that your experience with the owner of the second store differs from mine.
