Would PCGS grade a 1964 Peace Dollar??

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
1. Would they grade one if submitted?
2. Would they list it in the Pop. reports?
3. How would they label it? (Trial piece?)
4. If you owned one, how dumb would it be to send it in for grading?

What I'm wondering is -- how would you authenticate it?

We don't have an authentic reference coin, and I'm sure the dies on the real deal would differ substantially from the 21-35 Peace $'s -- just like the 21 Morgan was very different from the 78-04.

So... even if you held one in your hand, how would you know if it was made by the US Mint with nothing to compare it to?

Yes, they would. Hall was actually asked this question a couple years ago, and his answer was yes.

Sounds like somebody could get a free grading. image

Given the press it would generate for PCGS, that's hardly a strictly altruistic gesture. image

[Edit to add: If such a coin came back as a fake, would you then be billed for the service?]
