Price Difference on 1972 Topps PSA 9 Wilhelm - WOW!

Take a look at the following auctions for a 1972 Topps #777 Hoyt Wilhelm PSA 9. These auctions ended less than 2 days apart. Any explanation for the difference??

1972 Wilhelm #2 - Ended 5/28
$33.00 + $8.31 Shipping = $41.31

1972 Wilhelm #1 - Ended 5/26
$72.70 + $3.50 Shipping = $76.20

Current SMR on this card is $130.00

Do you think the shipping charges scared away bidders???

Nice example. I hope many sellers see and learn from this.
I, for one, become extremely turned off by excessive shipping
costs and will completely pass over certain listings because
    of it.

I am sure shipping made a difference....

However, timing may had a good bit to do with it...Lots of graded stuff on Sunday-Monday and not as much Thursday-Friday...the card that sold today probably wasn't viewed by as many active buyers.

I also don't think that prices realized on '72 HOFers are very stable (I see one sell for $36.72 in Nov and $100.99 in Jan)

I believe that shipping may have had something to do with it, but to see a HOF early 70's PSA 9 end at less than half of what another auction ends (based on final bid price) within a few days of each other is a bit unusual.
  • Several things to consider:

Seller #1 has perfect feedback and deals strictly in cards. He also ended on Saturday. His card looked more centered. His shipping was fair.

Seller #2 has a 99.5 rating with 200+ negatives. He deals in everything from manuals to cards to clothing/shoes. His ended today, which was more than likely a very light Ebay day for many. His shipping was obscene and he has negative feedback that relates to slow shipping. Why spend that much and take that long to get the card? His card wasn't as centered as the other one.

Also the high bidder on card #2 was the second highest bidder on Card #1. Could be a case that you had two people going for the same card and once the first one got it, the second one was left with easier pickings.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

  • This one's not too hard to figure out. two guys bid high on the first one and the winner didn't bid on the second one. The underbidder on the first one won the second one, probably at about half his maximum bid.
  • There are many factors on these 2 cards one factor not mentioned yet is the scans on the cheaper card is terrible and also states that the case has some light scratches and if you read about the seller, "The NPS Store is a freight recovery company that buys and sells freight that has been lost or otherwise miss-directed in shipping" (in between the lines damaged product). as a couiple of his 1972 PSA cards had cracked or damaged holders, I won a few of the 72 psa cards off this seller and I am just hoping the scratches on the PSA case isn't to bad if so I guess off to psa for reholdering they go. Also hope his combined shipping makes the shipping costs a little easier to take as he does ship exclusively UPS. Just MOO
