They just took Ryan Freel off the field on a strecher

He collided with Hopper and apparently hurt his neck. They put a neck brace on and placed him on a backboard. The ambulance drove out on the field and just took him to the hospital

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Completely avoidable. Sure hope he's OK. Pretty good head bang on the warning track.

  • May 28 Mark Sheldon, of Cincinnati.Reds.MLB.com, reports Cincinnati Reds OF Ryan Freel (head, neck) was involved in a collision with teammate OF Norris Hopper Monday, May 28, and left the field on a stretcher. Freel was chasing down a flyball when he ran into Hopper. Freel's head and neck both hit Hopper's shoulder and he lay motionless on the ground for several minutes. His head and neck were both immobilized before he was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital to have some tests performed. According to the team's director of media relations, Freel was coherent and had feeling in his extremities. He was replaced by OF Ken Griffey Jr.

The last line in the news story is the most important. I hate to see things like that happen.

Agreed. It was a good thing Griffey was healthy and able to take the field.

that's too bad, I love the way he hustles....kind of scares me though since my favorite team has Grady Sizemore in center doing basically the same kind of stuff, running thru walls, sliding, diving and hanging out for flyballs all the time.....

Reminded me of the brutal Johnny Damon - Daimen Jackson collision in 2003.

    FROM CNN.COM:

Reds' Freel on DL; Wise called up
    Posted: Tuesday May 29, 2007 7:13PM; Updated: Tuesday May 29, 2007 7:13PM
HOUSTON (AP) -- The Cincinnati Reds placed outfielder Ryan Freel on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and called up Dewayne Wise from Triple-A Louisville.

Freel suffered contusions to his head and neck in a frightening collision with right fielder Norris Hopper in the third inning of Monday's 4-0 win over Pittsburgh. Freel lay motionless for several minutes before he was taken off the field on a stretcher.

The 31-year-old Freel was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, where tests on his neck and head came back normal. He was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Freel will see head and spine specialist Dr. John Brannan on Wednesday.

Wise, 29, was hitting .256 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs in 44 games with Louisville this season.

Also Tuesday, outfielder Josh Hamilton joined Louisville to get playing time while he finishes his stint on the 15-day disabled list. Hamilton is recovering from an inflamed digestive tract. He's eligible to be reinstated on Sunday.

He's probably as sore as Marco Andretti but it looks like he'll be OK. image

I saw that story in my local paper with the headline "Ryan Freel Carried off the Field". When I first saw that, I thought they meant being carried off the field like he was that game's hero or something (game winning home run, turned a triple play, something like that). Talk about a misleading headline! image
