Earl Campbell and Topps?

Does anyone know why Campbell held out on Topps after his `79 Rookie card? Are there any other star players that have limited cards?

Thanks for the info!

I think he wanted to be paid more than the average Players Association per diem for appearance on Topps cards. The same happened with Lynn Swann, who only appeared on two Topps cards I think...
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

While I don't recall the specifics, it was something like that.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Yes, same thing with Swann. He only had 3 cards, 75, 76 and 77.

Joe Namath also. He played until 1977, but wasn't on a card after 1973 due to not renewing his contract with Topps.

I wonder if that's what happened with Norn Van Brocklin too? His last Topps card is 1957, yet he played thru the 1960 season. I would love to see him on a 1960 Topps card with the Eagles since that's their championship year and the only title game the Packers lost under Lombardi (not that that's a good thing).

It's amazing how many great HOF Football players had only brief appearances on cards, with many having some long gaps between sets. I realize this is due to set size. I would love to see Topps, Phily, Fleer, get together and re-issue these 'missing players' sets from each year.

Just from 1960 Topps Football :
Len Dawson with the Browns, RC!
Sonny Jurgensen with the Eagles, RC
    Van Brocklin, Eagles, last card

    Willie Davis, Browns, RC
Ray Nitschke, I think Packers then, RC
    Gene Hickerson, Browns, RC
    John Brodie, 49ers, RC
George Blanda, Bears, last card after he retired from the NFL
the real Jim Taylor, Packers, RC
    Alex Karras, Lions, second year
    Boyd Dowler, Packers, RC

Wouldn't that be cool to see these cards made today, and on the same cardboard stock with no BS inserts needing to drive sales? The cards would sell themselves for anyone that appreciates vintage cards.
