New Collecting Project

I collect mostly PSA graded vintage cards and Topps base sets, but I was thinking of compiling an album(s) of the top 10 players in each league for various categories (home runs, rbi, wins etc.). Has anyone ever tried doing this? I think it would be an inexpensive way of merging my enjoyment of collecting cards with my love for the history of the game.
I figured I would buy cards from the year the statistics were compiled starting with 1981 and spread them out over the different sets. I will try to buy my favorite card of the player when I can, but that will be hard to do for the commons since I can't see them all. Most of the cards I will get through sportlots.com unless someone knows a cheaper way to buy cards from 1981 and up.
I plan to select 9 or 10 categories from each year and get the top 10 players in each league. What do you think of average, hits, home runs, rbi, runs and stolen bases on offense and wins, strikeouts and saves for pitching? I will also get cards of the Cy Young, MVP and ROY. Also, I will label each sleeve with the players particular statistic.
I will still continue to collect vintage PSA and Topps base sets, but I just want to find a fun, cheap way of collecting.
I am open to any other suggestions to help me with this project.

If you store these in an album, I assume you will be putting the cards in a 9 pocket page? Having the 10th player on a different sheet would kinda suck. Maybe you could do the top 8 and reserve the first pocket for the information about the cards on that sheet. You could cut a piece of heavy stock paper to fit in the pocket and type the following information:
1981 National League RBI Leaders
Player Name # of RBI's
Player Name # of RBI's
Player Name # of RBI's
Player Name # of RBI's
Player Name # of RBI's
Player Name # of RBI's
Player Name # of RBI's
Player Name # of RBI's
By doing it this way each category would take up 2 pages, 1 for the national league and 1 for the American league. You could place the cards so that when you turn to whatever section you want to view, all the cards for that category could be seen without having to turn the page.
Example of what I am talking about:
My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I like that idea a lot!!! Fortunately, I haven't placed my order yet, so I will adjust it to the top 8. I am glad I put this post out there.
