Any accomplished collectors of Chinese coins on the board?

I've got a few questions regarding the pricing of milled Chinese coins...

How close are the prices for early 20th century Chinese provincial coins to those listed in Krause?
Is there a better price guide for Chinese coins?
I have a few high grade coins, what is the best venue to use to sell them for top dollar?
Is there a website that has recent sales prices for these?
"Have a nice day!"

  • In general, the prices listed in Krause for uncirculated coins are low especially for TPG examples. Uncirculated raw coins are all over the map especially if the seller is not from the US. In my opinion there is good reason for this.

As like for US coins, prices for bronze and brass coins are especially very dependent on eye-appeal with true "red" problem free coins realizing many multiples of Krause. The few coins available in the April Ponterio auction in Chicago sold for strong money as did those in the recent Spink auction.

Recent eBay sales have done very well for US based sellers. Currently listed buy-it-now prices on eBay appear a bit optimistic but one never knows. Heritage has a few in auction ending May 31 and June 4.

Right now I believe eBay is a very good place to sell. Check recent eBay sales.

Unless you are in a hurry to sell the coins, I would strongly recommend having the better and/or rarer coins graded by PCGS even though NGC's standards appear very similar to PCGS in this collecting area. The PCGS label is well worth the grading fee versus selling the coins raw on eBay.

Moreover I would further consider holding on to your better coins as the current market is very strong and shows no sign of weakening. I believe this market has a long way to go. I and many other collectors of Chinese coins would likely surprise you with our offers for your better coins. Don't underestimate what they are worth.
