Friday afternoon ripping party

The ups man made me happy today, he brought my 1979 OPC box from Steve Hart. I know it's not real exciting but considering I've just been ripping 80's stuff lately it's nice to get something a little older. I'll post some scans if anything decent comes out of the box.

I almost bought one of those last week. $180 is a good price if they're clean. Can't wait to see the scans.

Does the gum kill 1 or 2 cards? is it stuck or is it nice and loose?

    lmk, thnx tom
  • Well, I'm at the half way point, the centering has been pretty bad as you can see in the first pic, but there have been a few good ones as well. Tom to answer your question the gum is stuck to the back of one card.

Nice Nolan Ryan. Watch those corners when inserting into the penny sleeves. (id just place them into the cardsavers)

If you could squeeze a 9 out of the Ryan, you might be surprised what it brings on ebay.

  • Well the second half of the box had much worse centering than the first half, I pulled three Bench's sure would have been nice if one could have been centered, here are the 2nd half highlights.

I got my box yesterday from him. Very off center and miscut. I got about 20 worth grading from the whole box, the rest are trash.
    Fun to rip though.

I didn't get an Ozzie rookie in my box, did you?
  • No Ozzie, Ryan was the biggest star card and not really much gradeable out of the whole box.

Opened a box a few years ago. No Ozzie, and only 6 cards with a shot at a PSA 10 (Jim Rice the most noteable). Still haven't sent them.

What do you want for the Stargell?
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • Jason, I actually think I may try to put a raw set together just for the heck of it, and I only pulled one Stargell so for now I'll be keeping it.

    Addict,

Thanks for sharing. I know the Stargell is a bear to find centered in the regular 1979 Topps set. Your OPC one looks pretty good.

In a clean late 70s Topps wax box, you're lucky to get 4-5 PSA 10s altogether. In an OPC box, you're lucky to get 2-3. Not sure what you guys are expecting, but they'd be way more expensive if the results were better. By the way, if that Ryan is a 9, you could expect at least $100 for it, maybe $150-$200. It's been a while since one's showed up. Aside from no Ozzie, looks like a pretty average to decent break. An Ozzie would make it a good break. OPC is tough.

  • Lee, don't get me wrong I had an absolute blast with this box, and got about what I expected to get. I will probably even buy a couple more boxes and try to put together a decent raw set. I know it would probably just be cheaper to buy a set, but what's the fun in that?

No problem, just keep me in mind if you hit another one or two.

I hear ya. I go into every rip knowing I'm probably losing money. But opening stuff is fun, so there.
