China Panda Gold Mintages

Can anyone verify that these Gold Panda Mintages are accurate? Thank you.

After so many years without knowing the actual mintages of gold panda coins, Bank of China recently released the acutal mintages of all BU gold panda coins minted between 1982 and 2006. In a promotion booklet for the 25th anniversary gold coin set issued in February, 2007, the Bank of China published the actual mintages of all BU gold pandas since 1982. Since this actual mintage data were not published in the official China Mint website and not known to general public, I am writing this guide to share the mintage data with all panda collectors. The actual mintages of most pandas are significantly lower than the original planned mintage. For example, 1998 1/2 oz has a mintage of 4,168 which is even lower than most proof gold pandas, while the mintage of 1995 1 oz is 17,412 which is less than 50% of the original planned mintage (35,000). If we consider the fact that there are two versions (large date and small date) between 1995 and 1999, the mintages for the above mentioned coins for each version are extremely low. 1998 1/10 oz coin has a mintage of 8,502 which is the lowest of 1/10 oz series. Since this date has two different versions, and it is also known that majority of 1/10 oz gold pandas are used in the jewelry industry, especially in most earlier dates, the avaliablity of mint condition 1998 1/10 oz coin for each version will be extremely limited.

Note 1: There are two version of 1987, 1987-Y and 1987-S. The mintage given in Krause World Coins for Y and S is reasonably close to the combined mintage mentioned in the above table.

    Some of the data looks absurd to me. Traditionally, 1 oz gold coins are much more popular than 1/2 oz coins. Yet in 1989, according to this chart, the Chinese Mint is supposed to have made MORE 50Y Pandas than one ounce 100Y coins. Also, consider that if the U.S. Mint only sold 44,000 1/2 ounce gold coins that year (and the Eagle program outsells the Pandas by a large margin), where did the Chinese Mint sell 120,000 50Y coins? 1989 50Y don't show up on eBay all that often, or in the grading populations surveys, so where is this monster mintage hiding?

    The 220,443 figure for 1988 50Y makes no sense to me either. If that were true the 1988 would be the most common 1/2 oz Panda (more common, even, than the 1987 100Y) and that isn't close to being the case. In fact the 1988 50Y barely shows up once a month in eBay listings compared to 10X that often for the truly common dates.

    Another example: the Mint claims 22,009 1996 100Y and 13,849 50Y were coined. This is a ratio of about 1.6:1. Yet over the last 18 months the 100Y has appeared on eBay more than 10 times as often as the 50Y. If they really sold 13.8K of the 50Y, where are they? I know of only one dealer who shows them in stock, right now.

    I have long wondered if accurate figures for these coins even exist. Would anyone care to comment?
