  • hi,
i been gettin robbed to on grades. i think you either have to have built a long term relationship with psa or be a big time dealer and submit 100's or 1000's of cards a month for them to be lenient on grading cards. you can't be a nobody like me and expect to get high grades even though the cards deserve them. i am sick of psa to tell you the truth. about 2 months ago i submitted a oj rookie that easily deserved to be a 10, but it only got a 9. i've seen 1970's football cards that are psa 10 that look like junk however since the dealer who was selling them were big with psa they recieved a 10. i am thinking about not even submitting cards anymore to psa because of this reason.

tried to attach oj rookie, but i couldn't compress it. anyhow, i sold it this month on ebay for $1000 that's how nice it was. usually oj rookie psa 9 go for 450 to 600, but this was in pristine condition.

Ill probably re-submit or go with another grader.......this is ridiculous. Everytime i see a card like mine graded higher and not as nice as mine i go nuts. I am irritated and obviously not alone.

How about posting scans of the cards in question?

  • i am going to post the scan of my oj rookie as soon i get it compressed. any advice will help. i am new at this and evidently this site only allows 50mb, but my scan is 2 kb, so as soon as i figure it out i will send it.
    thanks

Put the scan on photobucket.com It is free.

Then you can copy the image html to your post and the picture will show up.

Do a search on here about posting images. There are some good walkthroughs.

Lesson 2 - PSA is (usually) consistent.

Don't bother with scans. If you could tell a one grade difference from a scan, there'd be no need to mail the cards to a grader. I'm no sycophant, but if you're going to play the grading game, you gotta know the rules. Send your cards whereever you want, but I've never heard anyone tell happy stories about switching away from PSA because of their grading standards. Service, knowledge, aesthetics - these are all viable reasons. But for a grading newcomer to say PSA sucks because they didn't grade their cards right - well, no offense, but that's a cop-out.

They were consistent with me. I cracked out a 1950 Bowman from a 5 holder, I think it should be a 6. (Still do) and it came back a 5. Got that sub today. Another sub popped on Wednesday wtih a2 other crackouts. 1 1966 Philly PSA 6 and a 1996 Bowmans Best 9. Both came back a 6 and 9 respectively. Take that for what it's worth. They do have their faults, but all in all, they are respected, consistent and fair. (Most of the time)

I would agree envoy, there is always that "one that makes a go hmmmm". But aside from that they are consisitent. ONE grade either way is acceptable, IF the card is well centered.
  • who said psa sucks, i didn't. to me they are inconsistent though. i bought many psa 9 from 4 sharp corners and alot of their psa 9's don't even come close to being what a true 9 should be. if it's not 4 sharp corners fault, who's is it. i like 4 sharp corners, i think they are great, but some of their cards are questionable!

Sure there are minor variations between cards, but keep in mind they are judging more than just initial appearance. I have bought from 4SC corners too. Overall, the cards have been within grade, though I do have a PSA 9 1982 Topps Winfield that is miscut on the back side. It is so bad that half another player's cards is showing. How that one slipped through I will never know.

Like most everyone else here, I was sorely disappointed with my grades the first couple of times I submitted my cards to PSA, but after a few submissions, I learned to be super tough and truly objective with my cards (and using a loupe under daylight light) and my gardes rose dramatically. Truth is, if your cards are grading lower than expected there's a valid reason for it. That may sound cold, but PSA is the most reputable card grading company for a reason, and I for one, am glad they are as tough as they are when it comes to handing out grades.

Edit: I also don't buy the lame argument that big dealers like 4sharpcorners get all the good grades. That's BS, IMO. Does PSA occasionally overgrade or undergrade cards? Sure they do. And a big dealer who submits thousands of cards is obviously going to get more overgraded cards just because of sheer volume, but I've bought many cards from dslsports and 4sharpcorners and I've almost always been satisfied with the card and the grade on the holder.

  • that's your opinion and i have mine!
  • 4SC is probably more a function of the cheap-volume they send to PSA and not "special treatment."

(My most recent submission was bulk and it was my toughest graded submission ever, so go figure!)

I agree...The argument that only the big submitters get the good grades is bogus..I probably submit between 200-500 cards per year and I have gotten MANY cards graded very highly that were the first or 2nd ever graded...

PSA 10 1961 Fleer Jim Otto..I had the first 10 ever graded
PSA 10 1970 Topps Elvin Bethea, I got the 1st and 2nd (still only 2) graded by PSA
PSA 10 1973 Topps Jack Ham..2nd one ever graded
PSA 10 1974 Topps Joe DeLamalluere..1st one ever graded
PSA 10 1984 USFL Reggie White..3rd one ever graded
And there are a few more, but those are the ones off the top of my head...

It really just depends which grader you get..Some err on the side of the lower grade and others err on the side of the higher grade when the card is debatable..I've probably seen 3 or 4 PSA 10's (of the VERY VERY many) in my lifetime that I couldn't find SOME type of minor flaw...If you are sending in PSA 5-6 quality cards, there is a gray area...The Biggest gray areas I think are between PSA 9-PSA 10, PSA 6-PSA 7...Its typically pretty easy to tell the difference between a PSA 8 and a PSA 9 and between a PSA 7 and a PSA 8 IMO...

You think PSA is inconsistent, but you could pick 10 knowledgeable guys from this board and have them "grade" 10 cards and you would probably get 10 different answers...PSA is no different, its not machine graded, its human graded..Grading is subjective by nature..Know the game and you can be successful like MorrelMan eluded to...

If you think you got hosed, resubmit...

Ive submitted cards to PSA three times for a grand total of 16 cards. Each time the grades were as I expected or better, including a 4 card sub I just received this week, all graded PSA 10.

If you look your cards over properly, with the utmost scrutiny, trying to be as objective as possible chances are the cards will grade just about what you expected them to and often better.

Its true that some of the bulk submitters ( 4SC, DSL, etc ) have cards come back that are borderline at best but just imagine how many cards they get back with lower grades that we dont even see put up for auction on ebay.

How do you "go with another grader"? I didn't realize one had a choice. Also, are you saying that I am getting the same grader every time I send a submission?

I think almost everyone who has sent in cards for grading with any grading company over time, is at times very happy, very disappointed, or thinking they got the grades right on the money.

The best advice is to buy a good 10x loupe like Grote15 suggested and use a bright light to pre-screen your cards before sending them in. Also, maybe after the first look through, let your cards sit for a week and try it again. Sometimes on the second viewing, you'll pick out some micro flaws you may have overlooked the first time around when you screened them. You'll save yourself some aggrevation from disappointing grades and grading fee money too.

With all that said, I think PSA, since that is who you mentioned at the beginning of this thread, get's it right 95% of the time in my opinion. That's pretty solid to me. Not perfect and they still have room for improvement on those numbers, but not too bad in my book either.

Like a lot of posters here, I too have bought some overgraded cards from a lot of sellers on ebay, and I've bought some cards that I felt were actually under graded also. In the end, it tends to even out over time.

What would be great is if 4-sharp corners, DSLS, or any other very large volume submitter would chime in here and tell us their criticisms with grading companies they have experienced. Imagine those stories on a 3000 card order? They might get banned from the boards! LOL!
