Happy Memorial Day! From Your Resident Vet

Hi everyone – please indulge an old timer his memories.
My life was dedicated to the US Army from 1966 to 1997. I served in far off places like Korea and Turkey and points all over the US.
From the shores of Vietnam to the sands of Saudi in Desert Storm – I was there.
I received this retirement pin recently – tho it reminded me I got old, it also reminded me that I had a good life in the military.
I won’t bore you too much with pics – so let me just show you the one that kicks off my career – I’m on the bus going to basic training – my final award – The Legion of Merit – and a pin that millions of Americans received in recognition of their service.

Thanx for allowing me this moment – and let’s all say a prayer for those who are currently overseas in defense of our country. For they know nothing of politics and everything about service!

Stone.
This weekend is for you and your brothers who served our great country. Nothing you post in regards to your dedicated service will bore any of us. In fact, I strongly encourage you to tell us more. It's because of your blood, sweat, and tears, that we have the liberties to speak freely.
From the bottom of my heart, a greatful thank you.
keeping my ears open for oddball cards of Rose from the 60's and 70's.
Hats off and God Bless.
We active duty Army guys are carrying on the tradition that guys like you set before us. For all the hardships and sacrifices we make its still a great life. I couldn't imagine doing anything else...
And guys, don't let Stone minimize what a Legion of Merit award means. It's not an award they give to just anyone. In fact it is one of the highest service awards you can receive.
Thanks for your 31 years. Only 17 more and I can catch you...lol

according to my values and my needs. Nothing holds dominion over me, I stand alone as the ruler of my life.
Thanks to all members of the military, past & present, for providing the freedom we enjoy every day.
<< <i>Great thread! I served in the US Navy from 1977-1987. I agree that thinking invading Iraq was a mistake has NOTHING to do with supporting the men and women who are serving their country. >>
100% Agree, they are 2 seperate things
Ex Navy myself, 1989-1995, served on a ballistic missle submarine in the first gulf war, far far from everything.
This thread brought tears to my eyes, I have an eternal gratitude for all people currently serving and who have ever laid their life on the line for a grateful nation. As Jefferson said, "the tree of liberty must be watered with blood on occasion"

If I ever reflexively lash out over some stupid issue involving cardboard at you,
please remind me of your service so I can be reminded of what a jacka*s I can be sometimes and I can also
be reminded of what is really important.
Loves me some shiny!

Of course, only my little girl wears my uniform now.
GODSPEED TO OUR TROOPS OVERSEAS!
My grandfather was a character. Private to sergeant to private to sergeant to private (he had a temper, but he could train men). Great soldier, great man.

Word.
Thanks to all who served and serve. Whether we agree with the politics that send our children to war or not, we must never forget that they are our children. My heart sinks on a DAILY basis when I see the obituaries of servicemen killed yesterday.

Thank you for your service. You certainly have my respect and admiration.

Here's my hero - my stepson. He's done a tour in Iraq and was one of the first Marines into Afghanistan. He's stateside - for now - but he'll go back and when he does... Well, sleep is overrated.
He was a wonderful, smart kid - and now he's a funny, intelligent, and sharp young sergeant who has seen and done more in the past 5 years than I've done in any 20 of mine.

A thought for all of us. The men and women who served and lived through World War 2 are becoming quite scarce. Next time you meet up with one, bring a smile to their faces and thank them for serving our country at a very difficult time. I've never met someone of that age who didn't really appreciate being recognized for their service.
