Need your help on PSA-graded baseballs

Hi, I've written a couple blogs about whether or not to get single-signed baseballs graded. I write for SCD and have for close to 13 years now. Here's a small portion:

Do you grade them or not? It's obvious that if the ball is a modern signature and the ball has smudges all over it and is yellowed, you don't grade it. Or if you've got a snow-white Babe Ruth-signed ball with a perfect signature, you get it graded. Everything else is a gray area. How about a Pete Rose single-signed baseball that's a perfect signature on a perfect baseball?

I'm looking for your feedback on this issue and I'd like to post the feedback in future blogs. Everyone knows about card grading, but not that many collectors know that much about grading baseballs. My blog address is My blog: The Auction Block and I'm asking you to please read it and post your thoughts, whether it's on this forum or in the comments section. I wrote the first part yesterday so you'll have to scroll down to the "Grading signed baseballs" story first and then read the top story. Thanks in advance.

I think like anything, a 9 or a 10 is going to command a premium regardless of what it is.
  • What is your take on whether 9s and 10s are easy? Some claim they are super easy, others say they are really tough to get. I saw a dealer at the national last year with a double table full of them and it was tough to find 10s of most of the players. Any word on when they are going to get a population report?
