Assembling an all-time finest Lincoln Memorial Set from Raw Stock...

Well, do you think it is possible? You can't buy any slabs, just raw Lincoln Memorials. I don't know about the finest, but I think that you could get close. Probably would take considerable time, though.

Thoughts?

I think considerable time is an understatement!

I'll bet there are some raw sets out there that would give some of the top slabbed sets a run for their money. Those sets have probably been a work in progress for 20-30 years...if not more.

I'd be willing to bet that it would take at least a decade or two to find an all-time finest set from 59-date (including SMS and newer business strikes since 05'). I don't think it could ever be done with varieties though. Some of those lincolns are way too rare to cherrypick out of rolls...

It is possible, but very difficult and time consuming. Some of the Lincoln collectors have come close to doing this. It would be cheaper to buy them, the rolls and mint sets to search is daunting to find a top set caliber coin for each date and mint.

I agree. Given what people are asking for common date cent rolls, you will invest half the money right up front just buying rolls, OR traveling to a heck of a lot of shows to find your coins. I have both a raw and slab set. The raw set is in 4 Capital Plastic Holders. Believe me, its harder to find raw examples, but the raw set sure is a head turner when its displayed over dragging out those darn blue boxes.

    WS,

Do you get any sort of long-term toning when your raw coins are in those Capitol plastic holders? I've always wondered if that is ever a problem. I bet it looks VERY cool to see all the coins together though!

So if it is cheaper just to buy top pop instead of searching rolls and making them, then why does anyone seasrch rolls, they just loose money. If no one searches, then where do they come from?

  • I am doing almost as you say, except on a rare occasion I buy an already graded coin for my set (I often buy already graded coins, but most aren't nice enough and I end up reselling them).

    Here is my set

I've been working on it for 5 years. I've searched over 10,000 rolls. The 1963,1967,1972-d and most others I got graded myself. I traded my ms67 64-d (got graded myself) and some others for my ms67 73-d. It's okay for the grade but I hope to find my own nicer one. I also sold the ms67 69-p (pop 4) I got graded as I have a clearly nicer one currently graded ms66. I bought the ms67 70-s sd,76-d and 85-p as they are truly exceptional coins, ones I likely won't be able to ever find nicer.

Due to pcgs inconsistency I doubt my set will ever rank #1 in the registry, but when it is done, it'll be the finest set (or it'll never be done image )

Edit: I'll be taking more pictures very soon! I'll post them when I do. I'm also getting the 69-p and several others ready to go in for a regrade. Just waiting until I have the money for grading fees.

It can be fun, it is only cheaper if you don't count your time. We are talking about building a top set here, think about that, how much time and how many coins. In the time it would take, with the rolls, you clearly can make more at a rather mundane job, but if the time is taken out, as in a hobby, then it is worthwhile.
  • I would think that it would be possible. I have taken the same approach with the Standing Liberty Quarters. I have bought allmost al the coins raw or from the lesser grading company, breaking them out of the holders and submitting them to PCGS. The cost per coin is $322.50 and I have only 6 coins to go. they are the hardest and I have been burned about 6 times with raw coins that get BB'd, but my set is right up there with the best at nunber six in the basic 16 to 30 SLQ's.

So yes I think you can do it !!
