Most underrated non-parallel insert set.....

Remember when insert-mania started in 1991 with the Leaf Gold Rookies and Donruss Elite, then spread like wildfire in 1992 to just about every set? Well, here's my favorite non-parallel insert set from that era:

1993 Select Aces.

I won't even listen to any other arguments. OK, maybe I'll listen. Which are your favorites?

I was into baseball at the time and really liked that insert set too, wasn't there a Black Jack McDowell card in that set too?
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
Yep. McDowell is in there. That guy was damn menacing for a few years back then. Didn't he used to hang out with Pearl Jam?

I actually just bought the set. I paid a little more than its worth, but I hadn't seen one in forever so I figured why the hell not. Here's the link: Auction

I think part of the reason I started this thread was to justify my overspedning. I hope it works.

1996 Blue Chip prospects. I have a few lying around. Pulled an A-Rod and traded it straight across for a EX-MT 1968 Mantle, oh the wacky 90's.

You forgot the Select Stars from 1993. Very difficult set to do. I have about 2/3 of the set.

Favorite set though is the 1997 Donruss Preferred cards with 1 gram of Gold, Silver or Platinum in the card.

I believe those 93 Select Aces were only available in magazine (jumbo) packs, and the Select Stars were only available in hobby packs.

Also, I remember pulling a Billy Wagner Blue Chip Prospects out of the only 96 Upper Deck box I opened. I read his strikeout stats on the back, and I knew he might turn out to be a pretty good pitcher. image
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001

Yep, the Aces were only available in jumbo packs. I haven't seen a jumbo box for years. There was also a red Chase Rookies set, but I'm not sure which packs those were in.

1993 SP All-Pros. I might be biased as I am #1 so far in that set.

I had several to those. Still have the Jerry Rice from the Football product. We only found the Ingots in the large Gold Tins. They were about $25 more expensive, but had great inserts. Pull the Griffey Die-Cut Platinum, still have it somewhere. 90s inserts were cool.

1996 was a great year for inserts. Leaf products were wonderful.
  • 1993 Refractors, of course!!

94 Flair Hot Gloves were cool

There was also one, I can't remember who did it or what year, but it was a flamethrower theme with a pitcher and a die-cut flame background that was pretty intricate.

I think you're talking about the 1996 Pacific Prisms Flamethrowers insert, but Finest also had one in 1995 that wasn't die-cut. Pretty much anything die-cut was crazy popular in 1993-1995 after SP came on the scene. The Holoviews were ridiculously popular and the die-cuts even moreso, and the Flair Hot Gloves had a big following as well. That was actually when pulling a 1:60 card meant you did well.

I like those die-cut gold All Star basketball inserts from 1993 Upper Deck SE.
Those were very cool and very tough with no chipping.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

1997 Skybox A Cut Above Baseball

Very cool die-cut set that was nearly impossible to pull at 1 per 12 box case (1:288). image
