Counterfeit 1879-CC, help please, what to look for...

Hello. Could some of you help me with hints what to look for if I suspect that an 1879-CC I have is a fake? It's a cap die VAM 3, ANACS VF20.

Thanks much, jsf

check the mint mark. it should have a rusted die effect. the mint mark will appear 'shoddy' this is a marker of the genuine coin. hope this helps.

The mintmark on the VAM 3 is supposed to look like crap. The term "cap die" or "capped die" when referring to this originated from a a typographical error. This variety has nothing to do with die caps. The original term was, in fact "crappy die," shortened to "crap die" presumably because it was easier to say. Once typed into notes, it became "cap die" because the transcriptionist's finger jammed between the R and T keys of the typewriter. It didn't get caught in proofreading, and even if it had, it would have required a lot more work than desired to get the R put back into the word. The terms "cap die" and its error-coin-based derivative "capped die" stuck. Other than the first sentence, I made all this up just now. But since it's on the Intenet, it must be true, right?

I seriously doubt a counterfeit 79-CC would get slabbed by ANACS, despite what the top PCGS cheerleaders might say.

That coin looks 100% genuine to me.

I have not been able to capture it in a photo, but at just the right angle it sure looks like excessive heat has been applied to the mint mark spot...

I must be overly paranoid again, ...ya' think? image

It's good. Mintmark looks like it's supposed to. See my earlier post.

actually, it would've been worth a lot more if it was a fake, expecially in a TPG holder...

Oh, well...I guess you're just stuck with an authentic one...sorry 'bout that
