eBay is like crack ...

Ever since I did my first listing - I can't stop selling. Even with the fact that I'm losing money on most of the coins. I don't know what I like more - the picture taking part, listing design part, or the part where it takes Canada Post 4-5 weeks to deliver my coins to people (ok, so probably not the last part). Perhaps it's the "gambling" aspect of it? I actually consider the whole thing fun - is that sad?

Need my fix - going to go check my auctions now image

I got tired of the losing money part and started consigning to a dealer. Even after he takes his 15% I usually
at least get what I paid for the coin.

I agree, BS - if I am ever to sell any of my primary collection pieces - I would definitely go with a consignment.

I guess it depends on whether you have access to a dealer that would make it worthwhile. My local dealer normally buys Darkside at 25% of Krause and sells at 50% of Krause. Ain't no way I'm selling to him. I'd lose my a$$.

For most of the raw stuff I'm listing now, it's material that has been collecting dust for the last 10+ years, so in a way it's "found money".

I find that using the Markdown Manager to run occasional XX%-Off! sales on eBay brings in purchases.

Of course I do stores listings with Best Offer only; ain't no way I'm touching auction format again... too much of a downside... learned my lesson... image

So what is the going rate with relation to Krause? Is there any dealers who use a fair straight percentage? Especially when Krause only gives a BU price and you have a Gem coin.

    I consign to a dealer's bid board

start out at what you paid + 10% for his commision

if coin doesn't sell 0.25 buyback fee

2 week bids on bid board

No mailing, no paypal fees, no ebay fees, no picture taking

just a quick 5 mile bike ride

I rarely even visit there any longer to buy OR sell. I tired of the greedy bastiches at both ebay and PP. When I'm hurting for some cash I'll sell a few more things but it really isn't worth the time or trouble. When my new web site debuts I'll have a selling page so ebay can kiss me arse good-bye for good.

If I could answer that question I would be posting this from my own tropical island!

(edited to add: I assume you are talking about what world coins will sell for on eBay)

  • Surely I can't be the only one who makes money on ebay, though I in no way compensate myself for the time involved. Could it have to do with buying too high to start with, or not putting up a listing that effectively markets your product? Another thing I discovered is that I have had better luck with starting price of 99 cents, or even 1 cent, with no reserve. In fact, when I want a coin for myself, I am glad when the seller starts bidding at an amount below fair value, but nevertheless significant. That is because I recognize I will likely get it cheaper than if they had started it at 1 cent.

Here is a completed auction that may show what I mean by marketing the coin attractively.
