PSA says trimmed - Beckett Says 9.0

Just curious on how this stuff happens.

I got my 6 free submission cards a while back (Still waiting on my big orders)- and on that order was two jerry rice rookies that i pulled out of a box i broke.
1 comes back 9
1 comes back evidence of trimming.

I knew the card wasnt trimmed so i sent it into BGS and it received a 9.0

Why and how do you think this happens?

    PSA is being very cautious.

"Evidence of trimming," usually does not mean "trimmed."

It means, "I think this card looks like it might be trimmed."

I have been out of the card business since 1998.

Can someone tell me what happened in the last 9-10 years as far as trimmed cards go? Was there a flood of trimmed cards unleashed on the market?

Not "was". They are still hitting the hobby in all markets (vintage, modern, all sports).

I just sent in two 1964 Topps giants that PSA said were trimmed. Unfortunately, both were crack outs (PSA 9 oc and nice PSA 7). I complained and they regraded - both 7's now. I think that PSA is using Trimmed and factory miscut a little too loosely.

    Good day,
Yes you are correct that PSA is using this Trimmed baloney way too much. Of the last 100 or so Non Sport cards that I have cracked out of wax, (Obviously I know they are not trimmed) about 10 or 10% have come back as "Evidence of trimming" B. S. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They even went as far as to completely reject a 1972 U. S. Presidents complete wax pack breakout of 5 cards. I compared with my micrometer and there is virtually no difference in any of the five cards. My big question is where and at what criteria are they setting there benchmarks from??????? HUH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is probably the one main issue of inconsistency I have with PSA. If a card is slightly short, it is deemed "trimmed", regardless if that is a common trait of that issue or not. PSA slabs slightly larger cards, they should slab the slightly smaller "untrimmed" cards too.

maybe a new grading category is in order here:

    Evidence of Miscalibration

Evidence of Distracted Topps factory worker

    Evidence of Faulty Machinery

and, my personal fave for the jagged cuts....

    Evidence of Rats

sometimes i think it is a way of generating more revenue for them. they now most of us will resubmit the card. just like when the say the card was recolored. well then how could it have either been slabbed once or later by PSA. Once recolored always recolored. Once trimmed always trimmed.

I am 100% certain that it was sheet cut. Well maybe 99.9% image I sent in a beckett 9 Ted williams and it came back trimmed, even though it was a hair oversized, my conclusion: Ps says trimmed for sheet cut cards. so that would be my guess, unless PSA erred. Where is DBH when you need him?

So true. Grading often comes down to good luck...................and bad luck.....................(i.e., extraordinarily subjective)
  • happens all the time, cards that i rcred that were pack pulled were said to be trimmed by bgs, i walked over to psa gave them 30 bucks and the slabbed my cards in psa 10-9 cases. Proceded to walk over to bgs shortly after and had them crossed to 9.5... Its a shame that its so inaccrurate.
  • lol I was waiting for that handcut statement.

its has nothing to do with luck....as an ex-BGS customer, i know all too well the crap they let into their holders....they dont catch the 1mm trim job...there are a few BIGTIME sellers on ebay that always have that elusive 9.5...thats cause they trimmed it, sent in 500 cards , and got the trimmed cards through beckett....we all know their names, no sense repeating them here...

ps...the old style BGS holders with the subs on the back, are more reliable then then garbage with subs on front..stay away im afraid to say....
