OT: Postal Money Order Question

Hey guys,

I was hoping one of our members could help me out here. I mailed off a money order on May 9th to WI. The seller contacted me a couple of days ago asking if I had sent it yet. I know it's been only 12 days, but I would think it would have arrived by now. Am I being impatient? And is there anything I can do at the post office to cancel that money order and get a new one?

Any help would be appreciated. image

  • I think for a small fee you can trace it and see if it has been cashed and by whom. I also think after a certain amount of time (30 days or something like that) if it has not been cashed you can get a refund.
  • Where did you send it from ? I think they can check at the post office after long enough time has gone by to see if it's been cashed. Did you save the carbon copy portion ? You should be able to get your money back (minus the price of the money order I think).
  • 14.3.9 Payment Inquiry
A purchaser, payee, or endorsee may, at any time, inquire about payment of a domestic money order by completing, signing, and filing Form 6401 and paying the appropriate fee; a separate form and fee are required for each money order. The fee is not required if Form 6401 is filed by a bank, other financial institution, government agency that processes money orders directly with the Federal Reserve Bank, or postal official engaged in official USPS business.

  • I think it is a $5 fee if I remember correctly

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm not sure how much the fee is, but I will look into it. The money order was for $46.99, not big bucks.

I mailed it from Bar Harbor, Maine and yes, I kept the carbon copy. I always keep them until my item arrives. I guess I'll give it a few more days and if the seller does not get it I will have to look into that form and fee.

  • Hope it turns out for the good. Save you the hassle with the PO.

Thanks Graphix, I hope so too. I was really looking forward to getting my '59 Milwaukee Braves yearbook. This is the first time in many moons I've had a problem with the post office.

I know some people do not like to accept Paypal, but it is reasons like this I wish all sellers did.

  • I agree, not to mention you do not have to go get the money order and fill it out and mail it and wonder, wait, and wonder, wait...

I have actually offered to pay a little extra for people to take Paypal if the fees are what bothers them. I hate having to get a MO.

Just curious - why would you buy a postal money order instead of from a bank?

You can place a stop payment on a bank money order very easily.

Some people like USPS money orders only.

You can get your money back but it's a PITA.

In the past, I've had to get a fresh money order - send it with tracking - and then wait the required 90 days (with stub receipt) to get back the original MO money.

Many sellers like to be able to cash a postal money order at the Post Office, and not a bank!

And for buyers it's just one stop at the Post Office.

I'm not a big fan of money orders either. I just sent one out for over $400, since I didn't realize the seller did not accept paypal until after I won the auction. Luckily, it arrived today. I opted for signuature confirmation just to be sure. Hopefully yours will work out.
