Cameo Cards?

Do any other player collectors collect "cameo" cards of your player? I just placed an order at SportsLots for like 30 new cameo cards. I'm excited to get them, as most I've never seen. It's also nice that they're so cheap - most were just $.18 each.

The hardest part, I think, is getting a list of available cards. I was lucky enough to find one (that I've actually had for seven years, but only now really noticed).

Anyway, here are a few examples from my current collection:

Can you explain to me what a "cameo card" is? Thanks.

If you are a player collector, a Cameo card, as ajw has referred to it, means a card of another player that features your collected player in the background/photo of the card. AJW posted a few cards of other players that all include Will Clark, who ajw collects.

Personally, I generally don't get these, although I did pick up a nice looking 1976 OPC Steve Ontiveros card, which features Mike Schmidt fairly prominently in the card.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

As Mike said, a cameo card is when your player of choice appears on a card, but isn't named or mentioned as such. I find them to be quite interesting, and are a nice way to keep your collection growing when you're hitting the wall looking for regular releases. As I said, I ordered about 30 today, and I'm really looking forward to getting them, as for most, I've never even seen the picture.

Here's an example of the 1976 Steve Ontiveros/Mike Schmidt card that Mike mentioned. Too bad Schmitty's looking the other way.

    Word Up!!

I do not see the reason to collect them though if they are just a blurry image in the background and not recognizable.

I thought you were referring to the seller Cameo Cards. I met him at the Sun Times show in October, overpriced and not particularly friendly.

Since that wasn't the topic of your post, I am not a player collector, but I think the idea is a cool one. I know the feeling of hitting a wall with your collection so this would be a cool way to branch out and still make progress.

...and sportlots is awesome. I've even gotten some VERY gradeable cards from varied sellers for my assorted key card football sets. I've kept track of the better ones.

I thought the same thing as well, I met him at the Shriners convention last fall.

While I don't collect them, they are pretty cool.

Check out Howie Long's 1991 Upper Deck football card. He's hanging out with George Brett on the sidelines.

This might be the most famous cameo ever. I remember this being actively collected when I was a kid in the 80s.

Another from 71. A young Nolan Ryan standing by the mound, watching the action.

Surprised to see a couple of negatives about Greg. He's always been aces for me to deal with on eBay.

Any Sandberg collector probably needs the 83 Topps Reggie Smith card for completeness sake. The 64 Eddie Mathews, in addition to being a cool card, has Bad Henry warming up in the background.

    And there's this beauty...

(Any Wes Unseld fan would have to break down and just buy complete sets for most of the late 70's Topps issues...)

I always put them in with my Pirates. There is a great one of Stargell in '73. I think it is Frank Robinson's card. I also believe Dave Parker is on Felix Milan's '78 card.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

Was Crowley actually planning on sliding? Looks like he's afraid Munson is going to punch him.

I think Crowley is actually trying to cover his head as he fears the ball coming in on the right of the card may hit him.

I've had very much the opposite experience with Greg. Either you both caught him on a bad day or I got him on a few good ones.

i remember the 1992 ultra basketball clarence weatherspoon card selling for like $5 because it had shaq in it. Back in the day during shaq mania...
