    I agree, a very ugly 5 IMO.

Still for the right price I'd take it.

prolly has 7 or 8 type corners but with that OC it was brought down?

wouldn't a card like that be better served as an 8 or 7 OC?

    Good for you.

    Thanks for the pic.

    What is the right price?

Looks like it has a singed top right corner, and possibly a chip at the top edge (middle).

Looking for Jonny Gomes cards, especially Triple Threads and printing plates. Will consider all cards, though. Got something? Contact me at c_u_l_1@yahoo.com

Not sure what the 'right price' is. it is over 12k as we speak.

I'd take it for 2 grand. The centering is just awful.

Four Sharp Corners sold a PSA 5 for $17,300.00 back on March 26, 2007. Here's the link:

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 5

    Also, I have a PSA 5 selling for $15,102.99 back on January 5, 2007. Here's the link:

The picture has been removed, so here it is:

So whatever the right price is, I can't see it going over $17,300.00. I see the card topping out at $15,000.00 at the most. But then again, how often does a LEGITIMATE Mantle Topps Rookie come available on ebay? Not too often.

That's not a Mantle rookie. His 1951 Bowman is his rookie.

  • cohorp,

That 5 is really nice, especially when looking at the other 5s in this thread. Nice work! I'd expect that Mantle to bring at least $18K given its centering.

Why would that Mantle not get an OC attached to it?

Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards

thanks for the compliments guys. i did pay strong on that 5. i needed at least a psa 5 for my #1 master set so i didnt really have a choice.

edited to add: i am surprised as well that the mantle in the current auction doesnt have an oc qualifier.
  • I'd hit it.

Because it's within the acceptable centeredness range of a PSA 5?

Very nice Micks cohocorp - thanks for sharin' image
  • no O/C qualifier?

I usually like sharp-corners and can live with a Q,
but in this case, I would much prefer coho's 4,
rather than the 5 that is for sale.

It's tough to tell from a scan, but, from what I see in the upper right corner, that card doesn't look like a 7 or 8, even with a qualifier. So it's either a 6 or a 5, and if what I see in the upper right corner is that much fraying, it's not a 6. The centering is within the acceptable range of a 5 - so it's a 5. No qualifier necessary. JMHO.

Centering must be 85/15 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.

That is for 4s and 5s.

    90/10 kicks in at 3.

The subject card does not look 85/15, but it must be.

I did a count with my pixel ruler without enlarging the scan and came up with 18 on the left and 6 on the right.

WOW!! cohocorp, 3 1952 Mantles? Very nice! I will PM you my address for the PSA 3 since that one is the red headed step child of your Mantle collection. image Seriously, all three are very nice. I am officially jealous!
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
18 on the left and 6 on the right.

So that means it is 80/20?

I agree Pat does have some nice Mantles.

    Good for you.

    18 + 6 = 24

    24 / 4 = 6

    3 * 6 = 18

I do not see how that card can be 75/25
Folks Who Bite Get Bitten. Folks Who Don't Bite Get Eaten.
  • I enlarged it and came up with 73/27 left to right.

Is this the card we are measuring?

Because if it is, I must be losing all visual ability.

Must be an optical illusion. Magic!!!!

I have 5's that look like 9's until you break out the loupe. That 5 looks like a 2 or 3. I would take a centered 2 or 3 over that any day. 12k is already way high in my opinion. That card looks no better than 90-10 to me. I think the guys with the pixel counter must have measured the card pcitured in JackWesq's post.
  • storm888storm888 Posts: 11,701 ✭✭✭
    So...............

How come the subject card is in a PSA 5 holder?

I cannot make it measure 85/15

EDITED TO ADD: I see it now. It REALLY is almost 80/20.
Without a hugely exploded picture - the card tricks the eye.

  • Storm, that's the card I measured. I just blew up even larger and got 80.5/19.5. This card seems to be in the 80/20 range with a small variation depending on the size you blow it up to.

Always best to measure, but from my experience, just judging visually, a 90/10 card has just the barest of slivers of white as one border; almost miscut.

Not a great picture. In person most would be mesmerized by that card. It's in great shape.

My friend and I are in the mix.

What should the max bid be?

Should it be a snipe, or should we try
to run some folks off now?

Your friend and you would be better off waiting for a better centered card.

That card is always going to have that problem. 52 topps mantle rookies are not scarce.

    Good for you.

I am thinking that the centering is the only thing that caused
    the 5.

The card seems to have great corners and the surface
looks very nice; (when blown up).

I know the importance of eye-appeal, but I was thinking
that if the card looks "new," it might have a higher retail-buyer
    in its future.

At least there is no OC on the slab.

    UPDATE: We got touted out.

Bidding has ended for this item at US $14,221.00. You were outbid.

    Winning bidder: allstar-cards (11775)

I still think the card is probably "almost perfect," except for the centering/eye-appeal.

A PSA 7 (OC) is now listed.

I agree with the corners looking sharp and the centering may be the reason it was downgraded.

However, even though the slab does not say OC the card was way OC and that would follow that card forever.

52 Mantles are always on the market, you can find a better one.
