Sorting through aprox. 50,000 cards...need advice

I purchased close to 50,000 cards yesterday. All 3 sports are (baseball, basketball and football) are a part of this collection. The guy I bought the cards from did not sort anything. A random stack of cards had all 3 sports mixed together.

The cards are from mid 80's to about 1998 and include all manufacturers. What do you think will be the best way to sort through these?

I was going to seperate by sport first, but should I then sort by year and manufacturer? Would I be better off doing team sets or player sets?

I have gone through 10,000 cards so far and I have came across 23 Jordan cards, a crap load of Bonds, Ripkens and Montana's.

Any advice would be appreciated.

sort out the stars and rookies, burn the rest, they are essentially worthless lol.

Sort them out by sport, throw away the ones that are damaged, PM me a list and condition of all the good Montana cards

You could try to see if anyone needed them for set building purposes, The ones you dont want or need or cant get rid of, donate to charity.

I would just pulls the star cards and toss the rest. I would also keep the insert cards. I'll take the Chris Webber cards off your hands.

I get stuff in like that all the time. I take out any packers and brewers I want to keep. Then I have a few dealers around the country that I sell common base cards to (see example list below) can hook you up if this would be something you would like to do. When i get down to the nobody players I have a local shop here that pays me $25 for 5,000 count boxes. I just finished going through a large lot of about 50,000 cards that i paid $200

If I tried paying people those prices I can assure you that I would get some seriously rude comments (IE: Swear Words) thrown my way.

That's one of the reasons I shut down my little shop. I tried to sell most cards at 50% or less of book prices and when people would want to sell to me and heard my offers, well I got tired of hearing what they thought they were worth because Beckett told them they were worth way more.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I have finally started trying to go thru the 130,000 + collection that I picked up a few years back so I know what your going thru. I've sorted about 70,000 cards and am building partial sets for my collection and putting the excess aside to figure out what to do with them. It can be overwhelming but it's still fun.
