So Where Are All The Women...

in sportscard collecting?

I'm filling out some address labels on some cards I sold on ebay, and it occurs to me that 99%+ of all the stuff I have ever sold has been bought by members of the male species.

Now, I can understand more men than women being interested in this stuff, but less than one per cent female?

A couple times someone witha female ebay name won my stuff ("sweet Sue", "Cute Debbie", that sort of thing), but then I end up addressing it Mark or Bill or John - what gives here anyway with the gender change?

I mean, you go to any sporting event, there are lots of women in the audience, right? Maybe not 50%, but more than 1% certainly.

You go to a card show (at least in the old days I used to go) and you see some girls/women (maybe pretending to be interested).

So I try to get my teenage daughter interested in cards, to pass them on to the next generation so to speak, and guess what? - she has no interest, other than knowing what they are worth so she can buy a car, or clothes, etc with the money!

I'm sure I am not the first who has noticed this - I would be interested in what you all think. There must be a way to double the size of the market, no?

i'll check with some of the guys in my Scrapbooking club and get back to you on that..........

i've seen certain guys using a wife's or girlfriend's ID for buying, and then their own name comes in on the Ship to.....there are some very successful businesswomen whom i've dealt with as well, but, of course sports collecting in general seems to be a male dominated world

p.s. when you see A LOT of women at a sporting event, you can assume that some are not there to WATCH SPORTS, same as if you or i went to see some anorexic hotties on the catwalk, we would not be there to WATCH FASHION image
  • The women in card collecting are on the selling end. Look at some of your seller addresses. BTW they're all hot and slutty. image

I was suprised at how many women buy stuff from me. I would say 20%. Now, most of them don't know what the hell they are doing but who knows in 20 or 50 years??? My ex-girlfreind thought card collecting was "weird" and my response to her was "too bad". What a great response to her BS and I came back at her quickly with "too bad". chaz
  • the only women that regularly appeared at card shows were the MOMS of the kids who were buying stuff image Less than 1% of all my sales were to women or girl collectors. The ladies you see at the ball games (for example the quasi fans at Fenway with the Pink Hats and jerseys don't know SPIT about the game or baseball) they are there to get drunk, talk on their cell phones and text message their friends sitting across from them. They will also get up 14 times a game to use the restroom, regardless of who is up, or whats going on on the field. LOL.

I am actually surprised at the number of female collectors who are buying from me on Ebay, unless its just guys using Ebay accounts in their wives or girlfriends names.

Yes, I think it is the latter. I'd guess that at least three quarters of the female Paypal account names are actually guys using their significant others' Paypal accounts.

bxb, I don't think you're going to get many chicks around here with that kind of face from Mr. Landis. I don't think he ever married, did he? image

Seriously, my wife would like to someday start a Red Sox team set collection, if I can ever find a dealer that does team sets enough to give us a good head start, especially Topps.

  • I'm a 32 year old woman, and I'm a powerseller on Ebay (lisu). I also do some of the shows such as Tristar and will also have a table at the National.

  • lol, I'm in a committed relationship. I post on Beckett, CollectorPlanet, and HobbyKings. I have a fairly large collection of Alex Smith (49ers QB not the Bucs TE) and Brett Favre. I also have a lot of baseball prospects (a pretty large Longoria collection and Alex Gordon collection).

Here are some of my favorite cards:

I cringe everytime I see those 1996 Laserview or 1997 Inscription autographs. I put both of those sets together when they first came out and, regret selling them now even though they have come down quite a bit in price, they were just really sweet sets and touched off the true autograph frenzy in the hobby I believe. I think it was the Favre and Emmitt sigs that were the tough ones, numbered around 200 or so, and they were going for $500 - $600 or more when first released. I can't believe it has been 10 years already... *sigh*

    Snorto~
  • Yes, I bought both of those after the prices dropped, and the 1997 version is still very hard to find!

I have GOT to get me one of those Favre/Manning dual auto cards!! Very nice.

    Welcome to the boards.

Nice reply Stone. Reminds me of "City Slickers"

Bonnie: "Thank you, it took a lot of courage to do what you did".

Billy Crystal as Mitch: "I'm married."

I did a show in Vancouver, Canada last year and did notice more female collectors up there than in California.

Then again, everyone knows hockey draws the hottest chicks...image
  • I'm in California too, and I see a lot of female collectors. I also know most of them because they like to chat sports with me.

  • Female here- waves to lisu (met you @ National last year/we are on other boards together). Been collecting since I was a kid.
