    << <i>To LowStartMick.

Don't be so angry LowStart and by the way what is your name or are you hiding behind an alias. If you want to give your name I would be happy to answer your questions since you seem to have done so much research on me.

    Jim >>

Well Jim did promise that he would address those questions. We will see if Jim tells the truth.

On the other side of the scale, though, the "issues" Highend has chosen to bring up are basically accusations of Dav's personality. I don't think it's appropriate to spade up stuff that essentially ask: you have a reputation for being an a$$hole, what do you have to say about that? - especially considering Dav did or said nothing in this thread that deserved that shot. It's one thing to set yourself up as a target,; it's altogether something else when someone paints a bullseye on your a$$. I think shame on Highend for a classless move. IMO, this has sullied his position as "a truly great individual worthy of praise...."

    just my 2c - it ain't worth much.... >>

I'll take that and live with the shame. And another thing, I'll own up to having a little fun with the thread up until Davalillo responded. His response should have been taken as that of a man who is certainly worthy of a fresh start, but I did spade up the issues . Perhaps I am guilty of not taking the high road and should have celebrated what may well be a rebirth of sorts for Jim.
Alas, I am only a man and my curiosity got the better of me. It was manifested in the form of some pointed questions. I am only flesh and blood and this condition still afflicts me to the point of wanting to hear the answers. >>

Very classy - spoken like a true gentleman.

Sounds like a net54 grudge between the high end collectors and low end guys who say most high end stuff is tainted (well t cards specifically). I know that Jim rubbed these guys the wrong way but can't we just let this issue die?

Things are not as black and white as may appear - Highend was a "contributor" here rather than some troll
and that's what I would like everyone to remember long after this thread fizzles out.

I figured Jim V. was being a troll. I thought it was turning into ANOTHER "gang up on 'Davillilo' thread".

    You're a good guy Jim.

The response of a man with class.

You're post paled in comparison to my past encounter with Dav! image

And he and I actually exchange emails from time to time - tho I don't think I'll be eating turkey for Thanksgiving at his house any time soon! image

    Thanx!

    No problem Ted.

It was actually more of a general response - I just didn't want people to get the wrong idea.

I was neither agreeing with nor validating his response to Dav - simply stating that I liked and respected
Jim V. and didn't want him to be viewed as a troll.

    Jim,

If you knew me, I don't think you would think I am a bad guy. Since
you live in NYC, I invite you to a dinner in Manhattan any weekday night and also to my home in New Jersey to see my collection.

Now as to your questions, I would prefer they be asked in a less accusing way but as I told you I would I will answer them.

1)Backbone of the Hobby Question--my intest in saying this on Net 54 was to make the point that I believe that high grade graded sportscards make up a majority of the dollar volume transacted in the hobby and thus were the most important segment to dealers as a whole, After I was told this may be offensive to some, I changed my language to state what I really meant. Now raw collectors as a joke call themselves the armpit of the hobby.

2)Is my friendship contingent upon people going out of the way for me? No--many of my best hobby friends have never sold me a card.
Among fellow LTS people you know I would put Anthony Nex and Al Crisafulli in that group. Whoops I think Anthony sold me one card.

3)If you are not with me you are against me? I don't know--probably depends upon the issue.

4)PSA question--No, not really but voicing grievances on this board does not accomplish anything. Talking to Joe in person or on the phone works better...and your right I was banished once for being critical.

5)Reliable Sources inside my head? No--they were real people--many of the people I know don't want there names used on the board--I am sure you can understand that.

6)Being banned from other boards? Yes--from CU boards once as described above and as you know from LTS by Tom Papa. If you want to get into that with Tom, I suggest you e-mail him. I have forgotten and forgiven.

7)Dealer Slights--perhaps in some cases--especially if I have a longstanding relationship and have done a lot of business with him--can't remember an incident like this recently though.

8)No progress at Hobby Summit--I was disappointed--perhaps a mistake to have Doug Allen of Mastronet there who refused to comment on his earlier comment that Mastronet will take light creases out of cards. Al Crisafulli of LTS was there and I'm sure will be happy to provide you with full details. Overall I have been disappointed with the hobby in its response to all the alteration/restoration going on.

9)Trimmed T206s on ebay--no--I would never sell trimmed cards--I have sold 25 or so T206 psa 8s and 9s but they are all legit.

10)I have listed T206s on ebay through a dealer--I have never sold a card on ebay in my life. These were all psa 8s and not trimmed.

11)Is Mike Baker the best grader--yes, I think so. A good source for you to ask would be Only Child on the PSA boards--if he says no I would agree with him as he is the most knowledgeable person about card alteration I know.

12)What percentage graded by Mike--I don't know--do you know how to tell the individual gradere that graded your cards--I don't. Maybe one-third of cards from Baker era.

13)Are pointed questions always an attack? No---yours are not. I have tried to answer all to the best of my ability.

I hope you take me up on my offer.

    Cheers,

    Jim Crandell

(and thanks to others for their kind words--Stone--of course you would be invited for Thanksgiving turkey).

    Well guys...

Spending time here is like being with family...

    Sometimes ya fight...sometimes ya don't.

Sometimes ya like each other...and sometimes ya don't.

Sometimes ya agree...and sometimes ya don't.

    Sometimes ya share...sometimes ya don't.

But in the end - like family - ya always have a home to come back to. image

  • Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I should add that you have lived up to your reputation as always being a man of your word. In retrospect, while looking at the big picture, who the heck am I to ask these questions anyway ?
At this time I am unable to accept your offer due to a recent surgery that has left me in a great deal of pain and maybe a little short good judgment . Enjoy your collection and maybe I'll be well enough to join you and Mike for turkey.
I would also like to apologize to anyone I have may offended during the course of this thread .

    Best Regards,
    Jim

I had no idea you had surgery. I'm sorry to hear that and wish you a speedy recovery. Would ya PM me your address please?

And like I said before - what you asked for were good questions - perhaps in another situation?
But, still - this totally, totally pales in comparison to my meltdown last year!!

You've always been a class act - and I never judge a book by it's cover and one cold day in July doesn't make it winter.

Good luck - I wish you the best!

    Jim

I hear ya - when I came to San Antonio - I had to work overtime learning to use the program in my new office.

Then 3 yrs ago I joined CU and Ebay - I did a lot of 'trial and error' searching but got relatively proficient.

I'm pretty dumb - so there's hope for ya. image

Frank - "old school" - I like it!

There is a much kinder and gentler BMW these days, eager to correct any past perceived wrongs. Like Jim showed in his follow up post, time does mellow some people .

What a pleasure to read the outcome of this thread... so unexpected... and so positive! You really handled this well Jim. Nicely done.

    Anthony - Keith

    I agree - good sentiments.

In fact, since I've been posting - this is probably the most civil "mix" that's come to CU and by far the most generous with their time and collections.
