Opinions on a card I bought tonite. 74 Topps Reggie Jackson

I am attempting to build a raw 74 Topps set in as close to Mint as possible, Tonight I won a very tough Reggie Jackson card.
I wanted to get opinions on what this card would grade IF I were to get it graded, which I'm not planning to do anytime soon.
Just wanted to make sure I have a good eye for what I am looking for in this set, Thanks !

  • I know that I am a newbie but unless I am missing something at least an 8 closer to a 9? Very nice card.

How is the back centered? Most of my 74s had bad centering on front or back. If the front was well centered, the back was badly off center.

That card has near perfect centering, so best of luck when you do send it in to PSA.

  • Looks like a 9 to me...

Thanks, I was thinking the same, I was leaning to the 9 side.
    Seller listed it as nm/mint+
I guess when I receive it I will know a little more about it.
Not a bad start to the set though ? ehh ?

You cannot tell if those corners are that sharp. I hope they are indeed, 4 sharp corners, nice surface, decent reverse, in other words, lots of things need to "be there", if this card rates a nine.

That's why PSA gets the "bigger bucks" for those PSA graded high end Hall of Famers!

Still, all-in-all, should be a nice addition to your raw set building! Good luck to ya!

I think that both lower corners and especially the right lower corner may cause this one to get an eight. I have a couple of 9's that look the same, so you never know. Very nice card anyway !!!

All four corners look pretty sharp to me! If the card turns out to be as nice as the scan, I'd say you have an excellent shot at a PSA 9. Good luck!

Is that a print smudge above the "E" in "Outfield"? That's the only thing I would even mention as a possible flaw, assuming it's even noticable and not a trick of the scanning process.

Fabulous color, centering and corners. A prime example of a really wonderful card, a big childhood fave.

Great looking Reggie card. One of my personal favs. Looks high-end all the way. At least an 8, maybe a 9. Very nice purchase!

Even though this is a grading card message board, sometimes there's no need to grade certain cards/sets. They look fine raw, in 9 pocket pages.

I blew it up BIG, in Pic/Fax viewer.

    Top corners are nice.

Bottom corners are a bit weak; left is worst.

    The Matthews card is SWEET!

According to Joe, the graders judge most cards by eye without magnification, so a 9 is within reach I think.

  • tennessee, that jackson card is really nice--at least 8 and possibly 9 quality; its funny that u won the jackson tonite, because my buddy broke away from his wife tonite just long enough for us to open a pack of 74 topps--it was a gai 9 pack--i have two more so i figured, what the heck! the pack was the "bonus team checklist version" and had eight cards plus the checklist for a total of nine cards--i thought that seemed like an odd # of cards for a pack to have--i figured it would have ten cards including the checklist. anyway, the cards werent bad--probably no 9's in there, but definitely some 8's and the rest 7's due to a minor corner ding here and there. coincidentally, i got the a's checklist that mentions your jackson card--and i also got the groovy horizontal matthews card that u won earlier in the week--but unfortunately no stars--just commons and a broken piece of pale-pink, almost flesh colored 33 year old gum. needless to say, i think i'm gonna keep the other two packs just the way they are--sealed and slabbed! good luck on your set--1974 was the first year my mom bought me cards as a five year old and needless to say, created a monster!!

I was immediatly drawn to the bottom left corner.

    PSA 7 IMO

maybe on a great day an 8.

with that said it is a very nice looking card. One that would fit into a near mint raw set very nicely.

3 weeks ago I sent in 2 1975 cards that I thought had great chances on getting PSA 9. I took the cards out of what i considered a near mint set when i graded it 25 yrs ago.

one got a 7 the other an 8.

now granted, 75 topps and 74 are two different animals

My point is we may think a card deserves a 9 yet PSA says it is not.

I thought for sure the Rose was MINT.
