Does anyone know what distinguishes the two varieties of the Meiji 7

StorkStork Posts: 5,206 ✭✭✭✭✭
1/2 sen? The JNDA breaks them out with values, and Krause just notes there are varieties. My Modern Japanese Coinage doesn't mention it and I can't find my Jacobs/Vermeule.

I see a decent one on ebay I might bid on for my album, but I want to know what I'm looking at in terms of the varieties.

Any info would be appreciated.

Neither Jacobs & Vermuele nor Munro mention any varieties for that coin Cathy. The Beautiful Bride isn't available right now, but I'll find out what those two character descriptions in the JNDA catalog say, and let you know.

    Mystery solved!

The varieties are "early" and "late", and they are illustrated. The two pictures below the full list of 1/2 sen coins, next to the caption of the 5 rin group, are of the obverse bottom edge of the dragon, which have differences easier to see in the pictures than to describe. The picture on the left is the "early" variety.

Unfortunately both pictures are very dark, and a scan of them is just a blob. image

Ah, very helpful! I didn't even notice the pictures with them being closer to the 5 rin spot image. Please thank your wife for me, she has been a very wonderful help over the years image.
