Roman Empire, bronze sestertius of the emperor Gordian III, 242-243 AD. A decent large bronze coin. Gordian III reigned 238-244 AD, and this coin was struck in 243 or 243. Interestingly, he was killed in battle by an Arab near what is now Fallujah, Iraq! Funny how some aspects of history repeat themselves, eh? Apparently Philip the Arab, who suceeded him as the Emperor Philip I, defeated him in battle there, at least according to contemporary Persian sources and the present-day wikipedia.com.

Attribution: RIC 307a, Cohen 267. Obverse: legend IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III right. Reverse: legend P M TR P V COS II P P S-C, emperor standing right, holding spear and globe.

I just bought this coin and a silver antoninianus of the same emperor, but prefer to keep the higher-grade but more common silver coin for its eye appeal. This sestertius, while not as high grade, is slightly scarcer than the silver coin I am keeping (Gordian III bronze rarity is R4, silver rarity is R2). I am still learning how to price ancient coins with my scattered, incomplete data, but I see that a slightly nicer (EF) example of this type met its $90 reserve on eBay in June of 2005. Umm... how about $36 for this one?

Too much? Too cheap? I have no idea. Make me an offer, or if 36 bucks sounds good, move quickly!

Great Britain, sixpence of Queen Anne, 1711. The 3rd edition Krause 18th century volume does not list a 1711, unless I am missing something. It does list 1710. Spink, however, lists the 1711. This barely squeaks by as an American Fine, and was graded as such by its two previous owners, but it is not quite up to British Fine standards. (Personally, I'd have called it VG10 on the American Sheldon scale). Nice for a lower grade coin- just normal wear and some light toning, with no distractions. $36.

Russia (Imperial): 1/4 kopeck, 1900 St. Petersburg mint, ICG MS66 RB.

A nice "tiny toner". Ex-Dimitri Gotzamanis collection, Athens, Greece. $52.

The first image is Phil Arnold's picture of the coin, taken back when he was still "Darkhorse" on these forums instead of the TrueView guru at PCGS.

  • This is a long-shot, but what've I got to lose.

    WTB: Yugoslavia, 10 para, 1997 & 1998. listed as KM#173.

These should be relatively common, with mintages of 21 million for '97 and 5 million for '98, but I just cannot seem to find them.
I really need these 2 coins to fill the holes in my album. I am desperate!!! Willing to pay US$10.00 each (including postage)
for them, even though they both catalog for less than $1 each.
