1987 Donruss Factory Sets

Anyone break one recently?

Not recently, but a few years back. Very nice, condition wise. Centering l/r (which is usually a pain) was pretty consistant, centered close to 50/50, but t/b centering seemed to swing from 40/60 to 60/40. So far, I've submitted two cards from that set, both of which got PSA 10s (Schmidt, Ryan). I've got a Dave Cone rc that'll be getting sent at some point which should also get a 10.

Unfortunatly, the first brick (with the rated rookies) took a hit, and all the cards in it have corner dings. :-(

I bought one back in 1988 (I was 12 at the time), cracked the bricks that day and kept it in the original box until a couple years ago. Submitted the Bonds and got a 10! image

BTW, did you notice the backs are flipped on these cards, depending on whether they're from packs or factory sets? interesting...

That's actually why I'm asking. Any chance you still have the Will Clark from that set you busted back in the day?

I'm almost positive I have that one still, want it? I'll check when I get home from work tonight, and I'll post a scan.

When I subbed the Bonds, I placed the rest of the set in a binder along with the rest of the 1987 Donruss sets, so it's safe.

I broke one last week and almost all the key cards look 9's or 10's. I can scan if you wish as I was thinking about asking what others thought they might grade anyway. Need to join and send them in.

Anyway, I am #2 on the 1987 Donruss registry, have a good stack of 1987 Donruss PSA 10's and I was really impressed with the quality in the set I broke.

Okay, made scans of the ones I pulled and set aside from the set. Donruss factory sets come packaged in several stacks of cards, the 1987 are in number order so I only opened the first stack, with all the rated rookies and the stack with the Bonds cards. Overall a lot of the cards are 9's and 10's. The Diamond Kings were bad overall, but few of the cards had chipping, nice clean cuts. When I get more cardsavers in I will open the other stacks.

So 5 cards from the first stack, and the Bonds card from the stack it came in.

Actually, there are Donruss factory set variations in 88, 89 and 90, too. Anyone crack an 89 or 90 set lately?
  • tennesseebankertennesseebanker Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭
There are variations in the 86 Factory sets as well, Seaver, Gallaraga, and a few others.

There may be variations throughout the Donruss Factory set runs, I know 84 had the steel vs steele variation too.

Actually, all my Donruss sets from 1983-91 are factory sets, except 1984.

No, I mean EVERY card in the 87-90 Donruss factory sets has a variation. In 87 it's the back orientation. in 88-90 it's the border patterns.

(I'm not talking about errors that were corrected in the factory sets.)

There are a few variation in the 1987 Donruss set, and if I remember right, all the Donruss factory sets have the backs facing the other way compared to out of pack cards.

Variations in the 1987 Donruss include several Diamond Kings with or without yellow stripe on back, and a few with different colors of blocks where the name is.
Here is the Joe Carter red block variation.

Almost all the variations are pretty much worthless, as is the norm.

How were the 1989 and 1990 borders different exactly?

The paint splatters are different in 1990. Actually, 1989 doesn't have a variation...but 1991 does, where the stripes are different (and some factory cards may have an extra stripe).
  • MeteoriteGuyMeteoriteGuy Posts: 7,140 ✭✭
The black dots on the borders of cards from the 1990 Donruss factory sets are in a different arrangement than on their wax counterparts. Not sure of variation, set wise, on the 1989.

Also don't forget that for the factory sets (all years since they did the bricks starting in 1983) Donruss "shaved" the edges of the cards to make them look neater and "more mint looking". I hope PSA doesn't use that as an excuse to call cards from factory sets "evidence of trim". image

I still have about a half dozen wax boxes from '87 that I bought at 7-11s in '87. I'm waiting for a very rainy day to bust one.

Sometimes they will and sometimes they wont, I have submitted a lot of Donruss factory set cards and the grading is all over the place on them.
My last sub had two pulled from an 86 Donruss factory set that came back evid of trimm.

And sometimes the grader will grade the factory corners on these cards like the cards corners were worn down that way. i have received several factory set cards with grades in the 7-8 range because of this, while the same cards sent back in later submissons would get 9-10's. It really depends on the grader, I believe, and how much knowledge they have with the Donruss factory sets and the "Factory rounded Corners".

And then what would they do regarding the famous 1985 Tom Seaver COR version, which are ONLY in the factory sets?
