$1,000 in basketball cards for $10. WTF?

link to auction

I thought I'd hit on a good way to move some "better" modern basektball cards on eBay. Check out the enclosed link. I got almost zero action and the lot sold for $10. I'm no eBay cherry, I've been buying and selling cards and other junk on there for nearly 10 years.

Can I get some constructive criticism about my auction description, presentation, etc.? Any thoughts on why this didn't work worth a damn?

Looking forward to your input and thanks much!

You would have been much better off listing just what was in the box you were selling. Maybe not card by card, but 45 Jordans, 37 Kobe, 52 Shaq, 13 Garnett, etc. Then, show tons of pictures, so people can see what they're getting.

Your description sounds like a "grab bag" auction, and most bidders are wise enough to avoid those.

I think its because you had no search words in your title.

    If your title was
800 card lot kobe nash jordan mcgrady duncan

Your lot probably would have sold for 10x more...At least

A potential buyer would just assume it's all commons. Saying the picture is a representative sample throws up flags for me.

For more traffic and bidding, should have switched the stars' names in the title for searches and details in the subtitle.

Sorry you didn't get a good price on the lot.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • It might have helped if you put Jordan, Kobe in the main title or the word basketball. Another possibility is that many people already have too many common cards and don't want another 1000 shipped. You could have probably gotten just as much if not more by cutting the lot down to the top 25 or so cards and only charging $3.50 for shipping.

it comes off as similar to those gimmicky deals on Ebay that really just say you will get a Jordan, Nowitzki, etc.... and so on without giving any details. Sorry it sold for so little. image

    Hello AUPT,

I am no expert seller, but I do tend to buy a great deal...

<< <i>The accompanying photo is representative of the boxes I'm putting together and is not intended to depict the specific box being sold. >>

Your auction mirrors the so called "dutch auctions" which tend to not get alot of action...I am not saying your lot was bad, but most lots described like yours are really a bunch of junk.

I like to know exactly what I am buying. If the lot was that loaded you should have spent some time detailing exactly what I would be buying along with many pictures...

Again, you ask for my 2 cents so please take it for what it is worth

  • one tiny photo, very few details.

click on my sigline and check out my auction for my basketball cards. Im liquidating all my crapola. figured i'd highlet the best stuff, more popular players. ]

    better luck next time

I agree you should really have listed how many of each player and what sets are included. Be sure to say all cards included in the deal so people don't think they are buying a chance or a grab bag.

Thanks much, guys. I've got several more lots of basketball and will have similar football, hockey and baseball lots in time as I put them together. I tried to be perfectly clear that every card was different and every card "books" at $1+. But I see what you're driving at; I tried to make it easy on myself by not going in-depth on listing specific cards or sets and by not using a lot of pictures, but in retrospect it would have been time well spent. Truthfully, I was looking to create a template that I could use to sell these lots in the future without a lot of effort.

I think my next attempt is going to be to sell 100 or 250 cards at a time, with more detail in the listings.

I've got little or nothing in these cards, so I can bite the bullet on this first try.

That is a pretty weak lot of cards too. I think even if it was well listed with a full list and 10 scans you wouldn't get much more.
