Vintage card with "questionable authenticity" come back graded

Has anyone ever re-submitted a vintage card that was deemed to be of questionable authenticity by PSA, and have it come back graded? Just to clarify, I mean graded by PSA or SGC, not some automatic grading machine.

    not me.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Yes. Back in the 90s before I knew what the hell I was doing when it came to grading, I submitted two early 50s Bowman small cards that were rejected for evidence of trimming. I sent them back and one of them came back a 6, and the other came back as trimmed again.

Lee -- I've had that happen, too. But I've never had happen what I think is the poster's initial question which is have you had a card rejected because it was counterfeit (what PSA calls 'Questionable Authenticity') only to have it subsequently holdered by PSA or SGC

  • yes, mikeschmidt is correct. I have a '38 Goudey Dimaggio that came back "questionable authenticity". If the seller wasn't so adamant about the card being authentic and the obvious dollar value, I would have given up. After months however, I resubmitted and should get the results today or tomorrow.

Let me change my answer to "no" then. In fact, I don't think I've ever had a card come back "questionable authenticity", but I don't do much in 50s and earlier stuff either.

schr1st has a Mantle Autographed card with "? Authenticity" as the grade.

He uses it as his avatar...
  • I've never personally had that happen, but I guess some of this could depend on the grader. If a card was borderline, like maybe in the sun and bleached a little from the exposure so it looked questionable, I could see one person rejecting it and another grading it.
