Are there varieties of the 1698 half penny, pertaining to the position of the date?

    Yes. According to the Spink catalogue, the type changed in that year: the earlier type with the date in the exergue (below Britannia), ,the later type with the date in the legend, after "BRITANNIA". The later type is slightly more common (£110 in VF, compare with £125 for the earlier type).
