I have evacuated TWICE in the last two days. Just got hooked up again as I ripped the computer from my office twice in less then 30 hours. Plus my entire collection ....... and countless other items. Rains are here finally ..... what a unbelievable couple days. Have plenty of surreal pics ....

Wow, hope everything is OK. If those are high dollar cards you should seriously consider a safety deposit box.

Wow, best of luck dan. I remember last year you dealt with flooding as well. Glad your family is ok, sorry you have to deal with this.

Just to let you know I have a bit of bad luck going on myself... Like a freakin idiot 2 days ago I ran up the stairs in my house and WHAMMO!!! I miss the bottom step and break my left foot, now I get the pleasure of wearing a cast on my left foot for the next 4-6 weeks, no softball until after July 4th. UUGGHHH. image

Good to see the smoke was rising. There could have been a cloud inversion, the smoke doesn't rise and people suffocate. Some people aren't aware that most fire related deaths, even outdoors, are from suffocation from smoke, not from actually burning alive.

Very scary pictures - glad it turned out okay for you!

Hey Dan, glad to hear the rain helped the fire. I understand that the blaze is contained but not yet under control. Good news. The containment is the big thing.

Spoke with my folks today after I heard that you had to evac. My aunt who lives near you left to visit her husband just before the fire started (he's in an assisted living facility) and she couldn't get home for a day and a half.

We deal with wildfires every winter/spring here in FL. Being in the disaster reponse biz I can tell you it's one of the most unpredictable hazards that we face. One wind shift and all hell breaks loose.

Since you, like many of us live in the (sub)urban/wildland interface you may want to look at creating and maintaining a buffer zone aorund your home. Most of it involves keeping vegetation trimmed and using plants that are not very combustible. The rule is keep the roof and gutters clean and make sure there is no "vegetation chain" other than grass from the edges of the buffer to your home.

    Some good info here -

Jerry, believe me, it looked even closer then what my pics show. I took those pics from my front yard. That huge inferno was LESS then 1/2 mile away two different times over two days. There were hot embers blowing all over the place. I had both hoses up on the roof with a ladder on each side of the house. It was NUTS.

Steve, thanks for the info!!!! image
