1989 Upper Deck Baseball Set without Holograms?

Was wondering how common or not was it to have it without the holograms on back? The person had pictured a factory set. and also had one of the set with holograms as well.

Your statement is a little confusing, does he show any pictures of the cards without the holograms?? He has a picture of a factory set, is it open or shrink wrapped shut, is he stating that the factory set cards are missing the holograms?? I have seen many 89 Upper Decks that have part of the hologram missing.

Did they have hologram insert cards back in '89? Maybe he was referring to those?

I think they had those round ones with the team logos on them that came in packs, not sure if they were in the factory sets??
  • I think your referring to the little diamond holograms on the card right? It was pretty common during the first print runs to have them missing.

    Welcome!

Now, I've heard of some individual cards somehow coming out without the hologram on the back but an entire set? Never heard of that?

One thing of interest - in 1992 UD made their factory set with "gold" holograms instead of the regular silver.

That should get Estil all excited if he doesn't have the set? image

  • the 89 UD factory sets had the little circle holograms in the set, and as said before not uncommon to have cards with partial to no hologram (diamond shape) .
  • There was someone on the Beckett boards a few years ago that bought a sealed set and most all of the cards were either missing holograms or had them randomly stamped on the backs of the cards, some had more than one hologram. Pretty cool stuff to me, but most collectors don't like that kind of stuff.

Mike, the 1993 set also came with gold holograms in random sets. And lastly, I once had a 1994 Upper Deck Electric Diamond Barry Bonds card but the Electric Diamond parallel was printed with the regular copper foil and not the shiny silver printed on the regular set. I think I sold it out of my dollar pile back then, one of the few items that I have sold over the years that I wish I still had today.

I have all the Upper Deck sets 1989-93. The 1992 and 1993 are just the standard silver holograms, as these were all hand collated sets. You have no idea how hard it is to fit a 840 card set in one binder though...

UD did gold holograms for at least two years. I think they were packed out in factory set cases, one gold set per case one year, and at a much tougher ratio the next.

I'm pretty sure they did all the 1992 Upper Deck factory sets with gold holograms, and did the "one gold holo set per factory case" in 1993 (but I think you have to open the set to see which one it is; I don't think they were marked on the box as such).

And I believe also, for 1994 SP, they did the regular cards with silver holograms and the one-per-pack diecut parallel set w/ gold holos.
