Two circulated 1870's 5 Francs

Ajaan's "Big hunk of silver" theory keeps rubbing off on me. You're a bad influence Don! image

Got the 1877-A at a local auction, and the 1876-K on eBay advertised as an 1876-A (nice bonus). Does anyone have pics of uncirculated ones of these somewhere around these years? Just curious is all.

The obverse was run again from 1975 through 1980. Here ya go: (its a neat design, I've got a whole set coming, save for the 1980 which is rare)

That is kind of cool looking! It reminds me of the Wildman from the German States. OK, end of discussion, I WILL NOT look at them anymore just in case I decide I need one or two to compliment the Wildman...

I'm not a big fan of re-runs so to speak from what I've found so far. I liked the St. George & the dragon design from the older coins, and after my consultant said the older ones at a coin show were crappy and overpriced, picked up a modern (1951?) design. Still a nice design, but it is lacking the mystique of the older designs, so I'll still be looking for an older one some day. Sort of how I felt looking at the modern 5 Franc. Still nice, but sort of like buying reproduction antiques to me.

LOL - Wait until I show what I bought a few days ago - Now you have me looking at darkside coins for my die crack, polish line, and planchet issue fetish.

Did you figure out what you're doing with that '67 set yet?

You mean you had to have somebody teach you the "big hunk o' silver theory"?

I thought it was instinctual, a natural born reflex every numismatist acquired as soon as he graduated from searching rolls for Wheaties from circulation. image

As to UNC 1800s pieces, I can't remember if I've had any or not. Don't think so. Of course I have had the more modern recycling of the design, like clarkbar posted, and in gem quality, too. I think Coindexter got a beauty of one from me in trade for a dipped Cuban ABC peso last year.

Speaking of ABC pesos, somebody should post one- I'll bet Jeremy/clarkbar would like those.

I should amend that to "big hunk o' darkside silver theory".
It was just the way Don went up to a dealer, flipped through a junk box, got to the how much part "15-10-14-11-12-sold" and there he was with a big hunk of silver. I asked him if he collected those (Can't even remember what it was now) and he said no, but there is just something about buying big hunks of [darkside] inexpensive silver that appealed to him.

Sure enough, next show I went to, guess what I"m doing? Not necessarily a bad thing though. And Rob, I still search rolls of wheaties image

Get some good pics of that blazing blue color on the silver coins and I don't think you'll have much of a problem.

Well, that's a no-brainer. It should appeal to everybody. image

<< <i>And Rob, I still search rolls of wheaties >>

Oh, sure... rolls of solid Wheaties. I cherrypicked a '14-D from a wheatie roll that seems to have fallen into a black hole at PCGS. I was talking about searching for single Wheaties in circulation rolls. That just ain't worth the eyesight anymore. It was when I was a kid, though. image

I totally agree. Plus, it looks like these are done in a lower releif design, similar to the US's own demise of modern coinage.

I see what the difference is now, in 1973 these became 50 franc coins.

Is this the george & dragon coin you're talking about?

That's the design, yes. The actual coin was one posted by Hyperion in a holey coin thread last fall. Ajaan looked at a few with me at a coin show and said pass and suggested if I was simply interested in the design, to try a modern piece. I did (Below); it is the right artwork, but just didn't have the right feel for me I guess.
