I did a search on "rechenpfennig" and came up with this (this is a C&P from an online translation):

Computing Pfennigs, also: Münzmeisterpfennige, (lat. calculus), (franz. gectoir, jeton), (English more counter), (splinter contador), (niederl. Legpenning, Raitpfennig) are metal marks which for counting on the abacus (abacus) were used. Because of their similarity they are confounded often with coins, contrary to coins possessed them however no purchasing power.

"Rechenpfennig" apparently translates as "computing pfennigs".

Yep, it's a jeton (counting token) of the Krauwinckel family of Nuremberg. The token-makers of Nuremberg had just about cornered the market in jetons; their pieces were sold all over Europe. I believe this one is dated from the period 1562-1586.

I've found this site most helpful in identifying jetons of the period.

Sapyx posted the link I would have.

It might interest you to know that several of those Krauwinckel jetons were found by archaeologists at Jamestown and in the surrounding areas first settled in the very early 17th century by British colonists.

And I believe the majority of those are from the late 1500s, so even if they were coins, they'd predate the Krause coverage.

I've had several Hans Krauwinckels, but never a Damianus Krauwinckel. Cool.

Sapyx... Thanks for the link, I have a few Jetons (or counters if you prefer) that I have been wondering about. A quick look at the site seems like it may answer a few questions and maybe many more than a few.

Most interesting to say the least... Thanks!
