I have a 1948 Bowman football original SCD 8 that I've planned to cross over...I looked more closely at it the other day and noticed that it is about 1/16" short t/b. I expect that the card has been trimmed, especially because all of my other 1948 Bowmans are so consistent in their measurements. I'm not sure, and I've never seen this card out of its holder, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much on that Mantle...
As far as a 7 goes, what does the upper left corner look like? It is hard to tell from the scans, but it looks like it might be too soft for a 7.
Its the best scan pic I can do...Ive tried blowing it up to post but cant get it larger. On my own computer it's a touch soft but not bad. Ive owned 7s that look worse thats why I thought I would take a shot purchasing this. I copied the pic from the auction so it isnt a scanner issue. Guess I'll get a better look when I actually receive the card.
Im sure some cards can slip through the cracks with every company. They certainly werent PRO. The original SCD had a decent reputation so for the price I won it for, its worth a shot.

when you say cross over you do mean that you are sending it in raw?
Sent in raw you may get a 7. Sent in as a 'cross' it will prolly stay the same.
I sent in 2 crackouts from SGC one went from a 6 to an 8 and one other stayed the same at 7.
In any event I feel confident that the card will at least grade.
