Ships, Colonies & Commerce token question

Does anyone recognize this variety of the token? There is an area on the obverse beneath the exergue where the H usually is that looks like a blundered die or series of die gouges. On the reverse there is a cud on the rim at 9:00.

There are a number of Ships, Colonies & Commerce tokens without a mintmark, some with a US flag and others with a British flag. We would need pictures of both sides to tell what the variety is.

I thought that maybe the variety could be told by the mess under the exergue at the bow of the ship...the piece has a British flag on the ship.

    Bill -

I haven't seen one like this before but it sure looks like die damage to me. It is not listed as a variety unto itself in Charlton's. If you post a photo of the entire token, I can try to identify it for you.

edit to add: it looks like PE10-8: no H mintmark, British Flag, No Guys, Bar Ampersand, short choppy uneven waves

Here are the photos of the whole token. I have another with the same indicators on both sides...the gouges under the exergue on the obverse, the cud on the reverse. No doubt that the problems are die related.

From the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Colonial Tokens the main identification points are - British flag, no mint mark, round knob ampersand and no guy lines from the spritsail to the bowsprit. This gives the range of varieties as 10-10a though 10-13.

10-10a Top ball of main mast not separated
10-10b Top ball of main mast is separated, round pellet on upper mizzen sail at left end
10-11 Left guy rope above the unfurled mizzen sail is doublecut
10-12 Large die flaw below ship at right
10-13 Line from the top of the main mast to flag does not touch yard of unfurled mizzen sail

Apparently your token must be 10-12 and the die flaw is an identifing feature.

Charlton 10-8 would have a bar ampersand

Duh! I missed it! Farthing is right on!

In my defense - I was only looking at the pictures. LOL And this one is not pictured in Charlton.

    Values are VG C$12; F C$25; VF C$65; EF C$150
