Grading question: debris under the top layer of the card surface

I have several otherwise NM-Mint cards from the '60s that have a noticeable spec of debris under the top layer of the card surface. These specs are about 1/16" in diameter and because they push out the printed surface of the card, some of the ink is worn off that small area of the picture and now it looks mostly like a small white bump against a darker background. Does anyone have any experience in submitting these and how PSA treats these surface imperfections?

  • I have a 1974 concepcion PSA 9 that has a similar bump, but no worn off ink... if that helps.

I have seen a TON of 55 bowmans with a sort of hair stuck between the ink and the cardboard. judging from my previous grades, I did not send them in ;(

I own a few nice looking 8s that have the bumps you describe. However, they would be solid 8s even w/o the bumps, so I guess the bumps fall within the nm/mt range.

  • I have several cards with that "bump". PSA doesn't seem to take too much off for it, maybe a half-grade. I submitted a 56 Wms that was a mid to low 8 without the bump and it got an 8. I submitted a 63 Mays with a bump - it got an 8, but probably would have been a 9 without it.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a hunch that since the two cards that I have show wear on the bumps, they will probably get bumped down from an 8 to a 7 or maybe worse. Ultimately for me, the blemishes are too noticeable and hurt the asthetics of the cards, so I wouldn't want them in my registry sets anyway.
