Any interest in doing a 1981 Football Case Break? *Confirmed Pricing*

BBCE has a case of 1981 Topps football for $8,000 minus a 10% discount. There are 20 boxes in a case.

Steve sent me an email and he is willing to ship direct, however he does not want to collect the payments. He is also willing to give us a 10% discount making the case price $7,200.

He also quoted the following shipping rates:

Less than 36 packs will be $8.00 shipping
1 Box will be $10.00 shipping plus $3.00 for each additional box.

Box 36 packs - $381.36 with shipping and Paypal (4-Lots) 360+10 shipping+11.36 pp
3/4 box 27 packs - $286.62 with shipping and Paypal (3-Lots) 270+8 shipping+8.62 pp
1/2 box 18 packs - $193.93 with shipping and Paypal (2-Lots) 180+8 shipping+5.93 pp
1/4 box 9 packs - $101.24 with shipping and Paypal (1-Lot) 90+8 shipping 3.24 pp

.

According to Steves description this is a Non-X out case. In case anyone is not familiar this set, this is the one to look for:

Card# Player PSA 8 PSA 9 PSA 10
216 Joe Montana (R) (HOF) 110 260 3350 image

1 lot equals 9 packs and if my math is correct we would have to sell 80 lots:

20 boxes x 36 packs = 720 packs
720/9 packs = 80 lots

I would love to do it. Right now I can only afford the 9 packs.
  • Count me in for 1 box for sure, outside chance of 2 boxes.

Wonder if this case was originally sent to Cramer Sports, if it was Mike Cramer of Pacific Trading Cards?

I just bought 300 mint commons for the set so I would be in the market for commons/stars to finish the set after the bust if anyone is interested in selling. I might do 1 lot as well. Let me know about payment.

Am I reading incorrectly or did you write that there were 3350 in PSA 10?
Just glad to be here with everyone.

$3350 is the SMR on a PSA 10
  • what are the odds of getting a PSA 10 Montana image

In one box, how many Montanas would you conceivably get? 2? just calculating....

I checked ebay and the 3 most recent sales:

    $2,692.00 April 27, 2007
    $2,862.00 April 12, 2007
    $3,161.00 March 23, 2007

Memory Lane was $3,435.00 on December 14, 2006

I think that I could live with those numbers image

I have opened a lot of 81 FB boxes over the last few years. Some boxes had 2 Montanas, some had none. Usually you wind up with one, but I have gotten none more than I would have expected.

Unfortunately, no PSA 10's on Joe M for me yet, but I have added a few 9's to the pop report. Nice set with a lot of HOF's and minor stars.

Im not trying to be a wet blanket, and a PSA 10 is surely possible, but you'd need a PSA 8 and a PSA 9 just to get even on a box. Obviously that's only taking Montana into account. There's also Payton, Bradshaw, Winslow, Monk, Clark, Hampton, etc....

If you are not looking at this as an expensive scratch-off ticket then dont do it.

The chances of anyone "making money" are slim to none.

    Hopefully thats not the intent.

That being said, if you get off on opening old wax then this case looks trustworthy and should be fun.

Agree with Carew, opening old wax is like playing the lottery. No gurantees. If you are tyring to finish or start the set then it would be fun as well.

Gary PMed me and said he could handle breaking the case mailing out "the packs".

Exactly. I enjoy the group rips and think it is cool that everyone post scans of the cards and rooting for each other. I could have just as easily called BBCE and ordered packs from him today and would have probably had them by monday.

I have been involved with four group rips/breaks and despite some issues I still had a blast and thought we could try it again.

Rick, are the paypal fees what it's going to cost you to accept everyone's payment? If so, couldn't a guy wanting a full box just send you a money order and save $15?

Nick I guess that could be an option. I was actually going to pm some other board members to see if they would be interested in collecting the money so I would leave that up to them.

If anyone is interested, here are the paypal fees that I calculate, assuming the one receiving payments does less than $3000 per month in paypal sales. This gives the highest fees, and if someone does a lot of sales, the numbers could decrease a little bit.

Also, this is assuming paying by credit card or paypal balance. If people choose to use eCheck, it has a maximum fee of $5.

Anyway, here are the numbers, unless I made a mistake:

    Box 36 packs - $381.36 with shipping and Paypal (4-Lots) 360+10 shipping+11.36 pp
    3/4 box 27 packs - $286.62 with shipping and Paypal (3-Lots) 270+8 shipping+8.62 pp
    1/2 box 18 packs - $193.93 with shipping and Paypal (2-Lots) 180+8 shipping+5.93 pp
    1/4 box 9 packs - $101.24 with shipping and Paypal (1-Lot) 90+8 shipping 3.24 pp

So, eCheck seems like a good deal in most cases, if anyone wants to use that.

    Sure!

I forgot one thing -- if anyone buys multiple boxes, each additional box would be $373.85 with paypal fees, assuming the entire payment is made at once and it is not an eCheck. ($360 for the box, $3 for shipping, and $10.85 for PP)

With eCheck, each additional box is $363 -- $360 for the box, and $3 for shipping, since the paypal fees max out on the first box.

Up really early today (never took the dogs out last nite and you guessed it--the sweet smell of crap woke me up at 5!!)

and I almost crapped myself when I saw this---till I looked at the dates of the posts. I was like--holy crap Steve must have gotten whacked last night.....

that's a lot of crap for 1 early post

  • Dennis88Dennis88 Posts: 5,797 ✭✭✭

I was wondering why this seemed so cheap...and then why it wasn't a go...and then I realized the date.

Interesting though...let's compare 2 prices here:

    2007 Box price: $360
    2017 BBCE Box price: $1395
    +387.5%

2007 Montana PSA 10 price: $2905 (Average of 3 prices quoted in this thread)
2017 Montana PSA 10 price: $12000 (last sale on eBay by PWCC)
    +413%

That is quite close for what is presumed to be 2 different collectibles (although the same field, of course).
