[--SOLD--] For sale here first, Krause, 1601-1700, 3rd Edition -- $42 delivered. (lower than Amazon!) [--SOLD--]
Bought this recently, it's still virtually brand new, but, due to an upcoming move and since I don't collect this era much, it's gotta go!

    Books & supplies:

2004 Redbook (spiral bound): $3.00 delivered, or free with any purchase below
2007 Redbook (spiral bound): $8.00 delivered

Both lightly used but good condition.

Littleton 21 B.C.-A.D. 518 Ancient Roman Coin Album, organizes your ancient Roman coins by emperor. A very nice album, if a tad pricey. I just bought this for my growing Roman coin collection but have decided to go with my own custom album instead. This is brand new and unused, just as received from Stanton the other day. I will probably be posting more information about it for some folks who wanted to know what it included, so I am able to answer any questions you have about it (including some closeup pics). The problem with buying type set albums sight-unseen is that one never knows what types are included in the set and what aren't. This one is pretty comprehensive, covering all the major emperors, and a few usurpers, too, but it excludes all the empresses and the impossible rarities. I have decided to go for "The Whole Enchilada" and collect the full spectrum of Roman coinage, minus the impossible rarities, of course.

List price is $39.95. I just paid $35 + S&H and will sell this for my $35 cost, plus $3 shipping, still brand spankin' new.

(Buy the coin below to put in your new album, and I pay the shipping, too- album and coin both, for $65.)

Roman Empire, bronze sestertius of the emperor Gordian III, 242-243 AD. A decent large bronze coin. Gordian III reigned 238-244 AD, and this coin was struck in 243 or 243. Interestingly, he was killed in battle by an Arab near what is now Fallujah, Iraq! Funny how some aspects of history repeat themselves, eh? Apparently Philip the Arab, who suceeded him as the Emperor Philip I, defeated him in battle there, at least according to contemporary Persian sources and the present-day wikipedia.com.

Attribution: RIC 307a, Cohen 267. Obverse: legend IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III right. Reverse: legend P M TR P V COS II P P S-C, emperor standing right, holding spear and globe.

I just bought this coin and a silver antoninianus of the same emperor, but prefer to keep the higher-grade but more common silver coin for its eye appeal. This sestertius, while not as high grade, is slightly scarcer than the silver coin I am keeping (Gordian III bronze rarity is R4, silver rarity is R2). I am still learning how to price ancient coins with my scattered, incomplete data, but I see that a slightly nicer (EF) example of this type met its $90 reserve on eBay in June of 2005. Umm... how about $36 for this one?

Too much? Too cheap? I have no idea. Make me an offer, or if 36 bucks sounds good, move quickly! It would make a mighty nice starter coin for the album above! image

(And if you buy the album above, you may have this coin for $30, and you will get free shipping- album and coin combined for $65.)

Great Britain, sixpence of Queen Anne, 1711. The 3rd edition Krause 18th century volume does not list a 1711, unless I am missing something. It does list 1710. Spink, however, lists the 1711. This barely squeaks by as an American Fine, and was graded as such by its two previous owners, but it is not quite up to British Fine standards. (Personally, I'd have called it VG10 on the American Sheldon scale). Nice for a lower grade coin- just normal wear and some light toning, with no distractions. $36.

    image

Hong Kong: large cent, 1901. KM 4.3, bronze, nice brown AU-UNC with traces of original red peeking at the peripheries (which don't show ideally in the scan below).

I originally assumed this to be a slider, but y'know, I don't really see any wear on it upon a casual examination. It could be a technical UNC. If not, it is pretty close.

Nor do I see the H mintmark, so this is apparently the 1901 "plain", which is twice as scarce (5 million minted instead of 10 million). Catalog prices run the same for both varieties until you get to the UNCs, with the this, the 1901 plain, at $60 in UNC, and the 1901-H at $50. Price reduced... how about $25 or swap?

    image

Russia (Imperial): 1/4 kopeck, 1900 St. Petersburg mint, ICG MS66 RB.

A nice "tiny toner". Ex-Dimitri Gotzamanis collection, Athens, Greece. $52.

The first image is Phil Arnold's picture of the coin, taken back when he was still "Darkhorse" on these forums instead of the TrueView guru at PCGS.

USA: 1930 Lincoln cent, ANACS MS63 RD. I bought this one as a raw MS65 RD, called it MS64 RD and ANACS said MS63 RD. Ow. I'm into it for $25 plus slab fees, which is probably more than it is worth in this particular plastic. $27. SALE PENDING

    image

USA: 1830 Capped Bust half dime, ANACS VF30 details/cleaned. Potentially a nice crackout for somebody doing a Dansco 7070 type set, as are a few of these other "cleaned" coins. $85. SOLD

    image

Here is my preslab scan of it, when it was raw and I called it VF20.

    image

USA: 1837 USA Seated dime, No Stars, another duplicate from the Holey Coin Vest. Originally purchased from a seller in France. $15.

    image

USA: 1875 Seated Liberty dime, ANACS AU55 details/cleaned. The image below shows all of the coin's faults but none of its selling points. In hand the spots are noticeable, but not nearly as glaringly obvious, since it also has some luster and some attractive iridescence, neither of which showed in the scans. This piece is nowhere near as ugly as it appears here. If I hadn't thought it an attractive coin, I wouldn't have submitted it. Trends for an uncleaned AU55 is $90. How about $45?

(Trust me, I know I say that all the time, but this does look better in hand than in the picture. And of course there is a full return privilege.)

    image

USA: 1875-S 20c piece, ANACS VG10. At least I hit this one dead-on. I called it "VG10, borderline F12", and ANACS agreed with me. I do think the reverse is Fine, while the obverse just a tad short of the mark. A very nice lower-grade type coin. (And yes, those terms are not mutually exclusive- "lower grade" and "very nice" can indeed coexist, as seen here.) $130. SALE PENDING

(Admittedly a tad pricey, but I'm into this one for more than trend price- 20 centers can be tough to grab sometimes.)

    image

USA: 1838 Reeded Edge Bust half, ANACS AU50 details/cleaned. I called this one EF45 myself, and knew it had been cleaned, but most were. I consider the cleaning to be market-acceptable. I do not blame ANACS for calling attention to it, though, and they gave me five points on the grade. Trends $320 on Numismedia- how about $230?

PS- I'm told that some folks have been able to get cleaned-AU Bust halves in the $190 range at places like Heritage, and that may be. But I have a little over $200 plus slab fees invested in this one. Make me a counteroffer if you like, but I am pretty near my bottom dollar on it. Of course, I'll listen to trade offers.

1996. Yep, that sounds like the First Edition. Does it say "NEW" on the cover? If so, 'tis the First Edition. I just shipped mine off to Cruzi in Australia. Cost $36 to ship by air, but he paid me fifty. Fifty bucks for a really ratty old Krause. Ow. I made sure I put some coins in the package, so Cruzi, if you are reading this, your book is on the way, and by air rather than slow boat.

im looking for a cheap Ancient Roman coin..im on a very tight budget as long as we keep this a secret from my wife( if she finds out i will have NO budget!!!) doesnt have to be fancy, but i LOVE the look of them and find them quite fascinating, not to mention the history behind them. Just thinking about where they come from and who held them...its mind blowing to me. If anyone has one that they would be willing to sell cheap then please by all means send me a PM or post here. If not i completely understand....i would have a hard time getting rid of anything that old, let alone cheap...honestly if i ever get one i doubt i will ever sell it, but i digress....SO yeah Ancient Roman coin, nothing fancy, im in it for the history not the value. Thanks in advance to anyone who may be willing to help this noob out.

Aballein- check out Johnsim03's list above. He has lots of inexpensive late-Roman bronzes for cheap, many with nice desert patina on them (this apparently happens from digs in Syria).

I might have an extra or two around here if you don't otherwise find what you want.

Edit- whoa! He sold out! I guess those LordM recommendations were good for business, eh? image

You won't be getting $300 from me on that, but it is cool, and gold, personally awarded by ol' Saddam? That is pretty fascinating.

I will whisper in my uncle's ear next time I talk to him. He is the gold buyer in the family. I flip all the gold I get over to him these days, unless it is pre-1900 with a hole drilled in it. image
