Who would want a Japanese Type set album?

StorkStork Posts: 5,206 ✭✭✭✭✭
I recently and happily acquired an old Dansco..so of course I started wondering about toning and preservation as I have put a couple decent (for me) coins in it.

I was looking at a thread on the liteside about albums and noticed Intercept is coming out with a US type set album...which might be quite the competitor for the 7070.

On a lark I emailed Intercept and asked if they would make a custom album and this was the response:

"" Thank you for your inquiry. We do have the capability to manufacture custom
albums. If you would like to discuss this further, please provide your
business contact information and we can contact you regarding the
manufacturing process, minimum runs and pricing.

Sooo...if there is some minimum I would have to ask about, is there anyone out there who would want an album and at what pricing point?

The Dansco I have is 5 pages with 74 coins and goes through 1970. I figure a little tweaking, add an Emperor and it should be 6 pages and maybe 90 coins.

Who would be a taker and at what price????? If anyone image

I'd love to get a Japanese type album, also. You'd probably have to get all 53 collectors of Japanese coins in the US to buy in to get a big enough price break on the album to make it feasible. image

    That's always an option.

Do we have an idea of the price range? How much does the Dansco version cost?

I have no idea about cost at this point...I'm not sure they'll still talk to me if I'm an individual image.

The Dansco is no longer made--the most modern coin is a 1970. It's rarely found on ebay--it took me a couple years and a couple of underbids to get one...I think it was about $85, but included several coins, a couple of them were decent enough they are still in the album image.

PM sent. On second thought I will be content with that rare Dansco too. image

I always wanted to have two custom made albums for post 1964 greek coins, not necessarilly intercept, but never got around to measure the coins and ask for a price. The regular ones, such as Dansco or Whitman, can be produced in a quantity of one too, with or without lettering below the openings.

Sigh, I guess I was dreaming. I must say that the Intercept people were really quite nice in answering me, but it looks like I need to find about 4947 more Japanese Type coin collectors---or hope they have really great contacts in Japan. This was their next email:

    Cathy,

The minimum on a custom album would be 5000 pieces. Any fewer in quantity and the upcharges would be too high. There are also artwork and die charges that go along with this depending on how difficult the pages are to design and can run anywhere from 1000$ US to 5000$ with freight charges being extra – about $1500. A six page album in a custom format would cost you about 20$ (ballpark) US plus the additional charges.

We just designed a US Type Album that took about a year to complete due to confirming coin sizes, printing and lead times to produce. The artwork alone took about 2 months to complete due to every coin on every page being different, which it seems would be the case with the Japanese Type as well. The album has still not been released as we are trying to confirm 3 coin sizes that the factory cannot seem to get right.

We have affiliates in Japan for our industrial products and I am going to contact them to see if they have had inquiries about coin albums. If they have, I will let you know. Again, thank you for your interest in our products and we will notify you via email when any new product is available.

I had come up with a final list of 80 coins, or even 76 if I took out one of the early 50 sen varieties, the trade dollar and the two 1964 Olympic coins.

Oh well, hopefully the new slipcover for the Dansco will help with any toning issues.

  • Cathy,
Have you tried to get an album from Japan? My type album is from Japan and is almost like the Dansco. I got mine in Misawa (Aomori ken) about 25 years ago but I would think they are still available. Don't have it here in the store but will bring it in Monday and will pass on any info on the manufacturer to you. Bill.

I'd be interested! I do have the Dansco, but an actual Japanese one would be very neat too. Have you had any issues with toning or evidence of poor preservation? If you could post pictures that'd be great!! Intercept is appealing to me due to the preservation qualities. Thanks image
