2007 Card Collecting Thoughts

The last time I bought a box of unopened baseball cards was 1991 (I think, the first year of Fleer Ultra whenever that was). Today, my son is old enough that I thought I would introduce him to card collecting, so I decided we'd try to build a 2007 Topps baseball set together. I started off by buying the 20 pack boxes from the major super stores. After about 6 of these boxes we were able to put togther about 80 - 90% of the first series set. The problem is nearly half of these of the cards have dinged corners. I don't know if it's due to the fact there are are only 6 cards per pack making then susceptible to dings or we were just unlucky. So I decided to buy 2 hobby boxes hoping the 10 cards packs and better packing would produce higher quality cards. Problem is, as I found out, the hobby boxes are nearly impossible to find in local card shops (always sold out when we ge there), and seem to be selling for $100+ per box on eBay. Is this what card collecting has come to in 2007, why is it so hard to find a basic set of cards from a major manufacturer. I don't see how my son could ever get into card collecting as I did when I bought my first pack in 1977 if he'll have to spend all of his allowance just to get a few packs of cards. Luckily I still enjoy collecting to some degree and will spring the extra cash so he can enjoy it as much I did when I was younger. Things have surely changed

Me: Who's your favorite player?
Kid: Albert Pujols
Me: OK, well he has around 10,000 different cards, so take your pick.
Kid: Well, I want his best card.
Me: That's gonna run you around $3,000.
Kid: Why so much?
Me: I have no idea.
<< <i>Card collecting defies logic now. I would have trouble explaining to anyone why they should collect. Here's how the conversation might go:

Sad but true...
Anyway, modern card collecting is insane. I collect steve youngs, and getting every single card of his is a task that will never be accomplished, there is just so much stuff out there. And thats a player that retired 8 years ago. Its not the same game anymore.

Wow, this kid is going to do well for themselves in the hobby... just starting out and he already cleverly shaved $5.00 off the asking price. I just hope he uses his powers for good instead of evil (see: Gary).
