OT-Presidential Autographs

The recent aution insert in the SCD contains a listing for a PSA certified check signed by Richard Nixon. The check is an obvious fake; it is dated the date he resigned, and is made out for $1,000,000 to Gerald Ford. The routing number is the dates of the Nixon presidency. Clearly this was a created as a gag. One has to wonder about the authenticity of other PSA certified autographs.

Unfortunately not. A friend showed it to me in the catalogue; I do not even remember the name of the auction house. I will try to track it down.

I have a book that has copies of presidential signatures throughout phases of their lives (sorry guys, dont hate me but I collect presidential memorabilia) This sig looks very authentic, but like it was signed in a hurry, or sometimes that means repetitive signings.

I love that its made from Watergate bank.

You all can't possibly believe that Nixon would actually sign such a thing willingly. I'm no expert on Presidential sigs but even Nixon has to have had a little more dignity than this. It is apparent to me that someone got a hold of a piece of paper with Nixon's signature, and created the "check" around it.
  • Yes, a clever collectible indeed. Publius, I too am a Presidential collector (sorry everyone else as well) and seem to remember quite a few articles about ex-Presidents signing pre-matted photos.

Think of it this way...You show the signer a matted photograph, with a blank signature box. To the signer it looks like they are signing a matted cut, but underneath the matting is (in this case) the check.

Many autograph dealers did this sort of thing with Ford, and when the matting was removed, lo and behold what was it??????

Ford's pardon of Nixon! While Ford did knowingly sign a handful, he signed dozens more this way (unknowingly). They do pop up from time to time. Usually in the $5000 range. If memory serves Odeyssy Galleries (former publisher of Autograph Collector Magazine) used to have one for sale.

He signed it, just as sort of a joke.

I collect a bit of Nixon stuff, can't remember where I read this, but I knew about it.

It appears that Nixon had a good sense of humor.
