My Mantle cards are back from PSA

Few weeks back I submitted 12 cards for grading 11 graded, 1 was rejected (GAI crackout) evidence of trimming, and all graded about where I thought they should.

Even back in the 80's cards that were true MINT went for more dollars then those that were EX. I always tried to purchase those that were true EX or True EX/MNT.

Hope you enjoy them even though they are not 8's and 9's.

I also had two 1975 Topps cards that i hoped would 9 but the came in at 7 and 8 respectfully.

To round out the sub I threw in a Mars Attacks card that 7'nd and a 1948/9 Leaf Rizzuto rookie that came in at Psa5. A 1935 football card National Chicle card 2 also came in at 5 and lastly for my 1955 Topps set I had Monte Irvin graded at it too came in at 5. My 52 OC Willie Mays that could be an 8 or 9 OC was graded w/o qualifiers and came in at 5.

The Spahn really disappointed me as it and the Irvin were the last 2 1955 cards I needed to complete my HOF portion of the set. The Spahn was purchased as a GAI first graded 7.5 and I was hoping it would 8.

Good for you.

  • What's the story on the GAI crackout--were you surprised it was rejected?
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

    Steve:

Those are really nice Mantles, congratulations! I think it's really cool that the cards came back with grades the same (if not slightly higher) than the raw condition that you bought them in 25 years ago.

Sorry about the Spahn card. GAI is, unfortunately, a horrible joke at this point.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Very nice cards! Those 61's MVP and All Star are some of my favorite Mantles.

I've been warning people for years about GAI - Buy their slabbed individual cards at your own risk although if the price is right and I carefully inspect the card, I would buy and crack it.

GAI slabbed vintage packs - forget about it! For the prices they sell for...you gotta be a glutten for punishment to buy and crack those GAI slabs.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

What year was the card that they say was trimmed? Do you have a picture of it by any chance? I'm just curious.

the card that was rejected was a 1955 Topps Warren Spahn. It measures up exactly with other 55's I have so I can't say for certain where it is trimmed. L/R looks ok, T/B is where I think the problem is. The bottom left corner is soft so I assume the top is where PSA thinks it is trimmed.

It might be, might not be, especially since it measures up OK.

If you can look directly at the top edge with a strong magnifier - like a 20x loupe - compare it to other edges of the card you think are good; as well as to other '55s in raw form that you believe to be good. You'll be surprised at the differences in appearance under such magnification, esp. if you sacrifice a low grade card (ideally a common with some sort of surface defect) by trimming one edge with an exacto, and using it to compare against, holding that side-by-side with the card in question.

Hopefully PSA made a mistake - but trying the above might better settle the question in your mind. image
