Actually I loved the Yanks as a kid growing up. Hi-lite of the week was watching Dizzy and Pee Wee do the game of the week and the cool Falstaff commercials. Mantle, Maris, Skowron, Tresh, Kubek, Whitey, Elston Howard and of course my favorite Yogi. Just count in the group that doesn't believe this signing will put them in contention. Well there is always hope eh? image

I think Clemens will be fine actually, he is a big guy and should be able to handle pitching. I believe the question is how effective he will be more than anything. I say 8-7 at best with an above 3 ERA.

9-7, 4.45 ERA, and some boos from Yankee fans in September.

That's probably what you said after the 1996 season when he left Boston to go to Toronto, with the Red Sox insisting that Roger was over the hill. I don't guess I need to tell you how wrong they were proven in the 1997 and 1998 seasons, right? image

Actually, that's about what I predicted when he left the Yankees and went to the Astros in '04. I guess I was a bit off image

Anyway, if over-the-hill and over-weight David Wells can still bring it home, I'm sure Roger can too.

They will be in contention before he even makes his first start.

Has everyone forgotten the ERA he has posted the last 3 years. He has been on a team that could not score a run and he still had an amazing record to show for it. He had something like 3 runs or less in 17 of 20 starts last year. I think he has a chance to be the difference in the division. The Yanks will get healthy and suddenly have a very good starting rotation. CLEMENS 14-4.
  • While his era may have been quite good the last 3 years, let's not forget where he was playing: the NL central. It's a vastly more difficult league and division he's in now.

That being said, I see 8-10 wins and about a 4 ERA.

Have you forgotten about the miserable bullpen the Yankees have? Even Mo Rivera is struggling. The 4 losses might be right on, but I see a lot blown win opportunities in the works if Clemens can't take the team deep in the game.

All kidding aside, it is an interesting topic as no one has been given the freedom to call their own shots like Clemens has. He is arguably only a 5-6 inning pitcher, which means the other starters are going to have to pitch into the 7th or later to relieve the pressure on the bullpen. It appears that the bullpen is the achilles heal for them. Its difficult to imagine they end up with better records than Detroit, Cleveland and Boston. I say close but no cigar.
